It's the beginning of February, and things are hopping in Lake Eden. Hannah Swensen is trying to put together some desserts for her mother's second book launch party while avoiding seeing Doctor Bev. Not only is Norman's new partner in his dental practice attractive, but she also happens to be his former fiancee.

But the big news is that newlyweds Claire and Reverend Bob are finally able to take their honeymoon. When old family friend Matthew Walters stopped by for a visit, he quickly agreed to take over for two weeks for Bob. But the happy couple has barely left town when Hannah finds Matthew's very dead body in the church office. Since Matthew had spent some time in Lake Eden as a kid, did one of his past sins come back to haunt him? Or was the motive for this murder something more recent?

If you are already a fan of this series, you pretty much know what to expect here. The large cast of series regulars gets a chance to shine at one time or another. There's enough talk of baking and desserts to make you gain weight by osmosis. And if that isn't enough, there are roughly 20 new recipes to try when you are done reading the book.

And, yes, there is a murder to solve as well. It actually progresses fairly well throughout the course of the book. There are some fun twists before we reach another inventive and satisfying climax.

The romantic triangle between Hannah, Norman, and detective Mike is still in full force here. A development early on makes the situation even more laughable than it's been for several books now. But based on some develops here, I am hopeful that Hannah will be making a choice soon.

There is little here to sway folks one way or the other on these books. Either you love them for the fun characters and delicious recipes or you hate them for the light mysteries. Personally, I still enjoy visiting with these old friends, and I can't wait until my next visit to Lake Eden.

If you've read previous books in this series then you're not going to find anything new in this one.
For me, I think it may be the last one I bother with. The 'relationship' between Hannah, Mike and Norman is beyond a joke now and Hannah's becoming more Jessica Fletcher-esque with each book!

Having read most of Joanne Fluke's books, as was looking
forward to reading her latest one.
How disappointed I was, this is more a cookbook
with a short story in between recipes.
Sorry but this is the last one I shall be buying.

This is the first Joanne Fluke novel I have read, and quite honestly this will be last. The writing was so immature, our grand-daughter who is only 11 would have come up with a better story line, come to think of it, so would our grand-sons and they are only 9 and 6!!!!

The dialogue was 1960s and where was the plot? Sorry but not for me or my several friends who I passed the book on to.

this time hannah is dealing with the murder of the minister who is filling in for rev. knudson while he is on honeymoon. the murdered minister ended up dead on the floor next to a piece of devil's food cake, hence the title. usual investigation takes over normal life in lake eden. meanwhile on the love front it definitely gone from the love triangle of mike/hannah/norman to something else as doctor bev makes her mark in lake eden. but is she up to something, hannah reckons. another good read with some glorious recipes to try!!!
