Product Description

Product Description

In 1987, Latif Yahia was taken to Saddam's headquarters to meet Uday, Saddam's eldest son, and told that a great honour has been bestowed upon him: that because of the great likeness between them, he had been chosen to be Uday's double. For many Iraquis, it would have been the highlight of their lives, but for Latif, a peace-loving man who did not agree with Saddam's brutal regime, it was not. He refused. Following a week of torture and realising he would be killed if he continued to refuse, Latif was forced to accept the role. After a gruesome training programme during which he was made to watch over thirty films of torture, hours of tapes of Uday, and undertake a final remodelling of his appearance, Latif was deemed ready. But it was only after the final test, a meeting with Saddam himself, that Latif made his first public appearance. And so began his life as Uday's double - a life on the perimeter of the inner circle of Saddam's eldest son, a witness to the horror of his insane life of debauchery, excess and brutality, and an experience for which he almost paid with his life on more than one occasion.

From the Author

Be a citizen of the world !!!
Can I tell you how I changed myself and maybe we can use the experience as an excperiment, maybe we could all try it for one day and see how we feel afterwards?
The first step is to stop being whatever it is that you are (American, Afghani, Iraqi, Iranian, Israeli, Palestinian, Ukrainian, or anything else!)You must now look upon youself as a citizen of the world, a world as it was created millions of years ago with no borders and no passports.
This is how you breakdown the political rule.
If you make every country your country then you will never want to hurt it or anyone that comes from it, I suppose it is a bigger sense of national pride, International Pride!
A very small percentage of people will always cause harm, there are three reasons for this.
1. Mental Illness
2. Propaganda (media, political, religious)
3.Money (maybe I should have put money 1st)
If we look upon the whole world and each religion and culture as our own we will be less likely to look down on anyone as we would be looking down upon ourselves.
There are common threads in all religions, we should always remember that instead of focusing on the differences. Stop saying I am and say we are.
I look at everyone without a political or religious tag, that way I can talk happily with everyone without all the crap that happened to me clouding my mind and I am far happier for it! If for instance I started thinking differently, Oh Americans are in my country, Israeli's are hurting Palestinians, Palestinians are suicide bombers etc Iraqi's are murderers, Afghani's are the drugs dealers to the world, Iranians want to be a superpower to destroy the world, Ukraininas are selling dirty bombs to the terrorists and the third world.Do you think if we continue to think like this that there will ever be peace in the world? Who perpetuates all of these stereotypes? the media? Our governments? Ourselves? The biggest proof for me that our views are nutured not natural, was when the jeep overturned in the dessert. NO-one cared whether the person inside was this or that we all just jumped to help! This means that inside us we are human and as humans we care!
It is important to have transparency in our disscussions, maybe we could start with "This is what I was made to believe" and maybe we can end with "This is what I CHOOSE to believe"
Maybe people may think that I am a dreamer but sometimes dreams come true if you work hard and honestly with all your heart. Not for us now but for our children and grandchildren are we breaking the ice.
Best regards,
Dr.Latif Yahia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book, 14 Nov 2003
This book corroborates many of the horrors I have read about the Ba'athist regime in Iraq. It gives an excellent picture of Saddam's regime and maybe a better understanding of the kind of man (and his family) who builds palaces and weapons of mass destruction while his people starves. Interested in the Middle East? The Gulf War? This one is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars THANKS TO MR YAHIA FROM BAGHDAD, 14 Sep 2003
Chilling. The more of this book I read, the more I wanted to know. Saddam has already cemented himself a permanent place in history alongside other despots such as Pol Pot, Lenin, Stalin, and Idi Amin. Uday Saddam Hussein, the elder son, was apparently determined to exceed his father's proclivity toward torture and summary executions when he [presumably] succeeded Dear Old Dad. This is the tale of Uday's "double" and his life before, during, and after his role as a decoy for Iraq's hated tyrant-in-waiting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved This Tabloid Tell All, 9 Jul 2003
It's a guilty pleasure. You can't put it down. Written in a tabloid journalistic style. Very interesting and true. It is about the "trauma and shock" this guy goes through because he happens to resemble Saddam's son and is coerced into playing the part. He saw a bird's eye view of this unspeakably evil psychopath dictator and his son's lifestyle, or deathstyle. He goes from perks and pleasure to torture, is reeling between the two and can't escape. Gives a real feel to what life is like in this kind of dictatorship hell. A psychological thriller and lesson for all.
