Book Description

6 Aug 2007
Award-winning author Jillian Hunter spins a captivating new tale of sweet mystery, reckless temptation, and scandalous desire.

Adrian Ruxley may be a ruggedly charming rogue, but he’s not a man to stand idly by while a lady is accosted–even at a wedding organized by the lady herself, Emma Boscastle, instructress in the social graces at her London academy for young gentlewomen. Adrian confronts the offender, a scuffle ensues, and now this smooth-talking heir is left to recuperate under Emma’s very roof, delighted to see the deep concern in her lovely face. She has a charm no scoundrel can resist.

Emma is scandalized by her own behavior–seduced by a handsome stranger, indeed! How will she be able to hide her indiscretion from the perceptive Boscastle siblings? The divine passion that Adrian has unleashed, and the sensual delights he has shown her, have suddenly turned Emma’s days at the fledgling academy into a display of impropriety and her nights into a velvet abyss of sensual abandon. But as their intimacy reveals Adrian’s turbulent secrets, Emma is inspired to her most ambitious endeavor: redeeming a rake.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Story. Worth a read. 30 Nov 2011

This is the fifth book in the Boscastle series.
Having previously met Emma Boscastle, the widower Viscountess Lyons, we are aware of her character. She grew up trying to keep her unruly Boscastle brothers in line, creating a school for underpriveledged women to learn how to become ladies. At a wedding, someone tries to take advantage of her. The hero, Adrian Ruxley, Lord Wolverton, a close friend of the Boscastles brothers, appears and saves the day. However his heroism causes him to have a head injury, so he must stay at the Boscastle home until he recovers. Both are drawn to each other, and during his stay, he gets close to her. When he is about to leave, he is determined to make her his, no matter what her family say. It doesn't take long for the former 'Lady' to end up being seduced and fall in love with Wolverton. Her brothers are aware of Adrian's interest, but as brothers do, want to protect their sister. The Boscastle ladies decide to help Emma find happiness, even if it means duping their own spouses. At the Boscastle home, Adrian sneaks in and sleeps with Emma, then says he will ask her oldest brother for her hand in marriage.

Through the book, we also learn of Wolverton's back story. His father, the Duke of Scarfield, for a time believed Adrian wasn't his legitimate son, so feeling rejected, Adrian left and travelled to the continent, fighting pirates and having affairs with two older ladies. He returns and almost immediately falls in love with Emma. I couldn't help but really feel for this guy. He's not the typical rogue/rake, having only slept with two different women when he meets Emma, and the way he immediately feels very protective of her is quite endearing.

When they are married, the duke somehow learns of Wolverton's marriage and asks them to visit. We learn of the duke's intention for Adrian to marry someone else, and you're led to believe it would create problems, but when the lady arrives to meet them all, she's not exactly how you expected her to be.

Overall, I think this is a very good story. For me, it just misses out on 5 for a couple of reasons. (Spoilers ahead)

1) The Wolvertons journey to see his family. It seemed rather pointless sticking highwaymen there on the way, making Adrian save her again and Emma to get a pistol out. It felt like a filler that should have been cut.
2) How did the Duke of Scarfield learn of Adrian's marriage, when it had been a quiet affair?
3) Emma's quick change of character. For so long, she's been the proper lady, but her eclipse of her character happens so quickly, perhaps too quickly. She desires Adrian and lets him do things to her too quickly, whereas a real 'lady' would have probably slapped him on the knuckles or something. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the story, I did, and I liked Emma too, but because of the way she'd been portrayed in other stories, she just changed too quickly for my liking.

3.0 out of 5 stars The last Bocastle hurrah went out with a sizzle, not a bang 17 Aug 2007
By Nihongoluvr - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I sincerely hope that Emma's tale is not the final note in the Bocaslte ledgers, not for the fact that i loved this story but more so that Ms Hunter will have a chance to redeem herself. Perhaps it's because I'm a picky reader, I can not stand it when the hero and heroines have past loves. Emma was a less than thrilling heroine, rather boring which left poor Adrian to pick up the slack. I felt that Emma and Adrian's relationship could have played out as a "b" line in another Bocastle story.
Though the love scenes were steamy, I was far more interested in the sub characters of Harriet the street smart urchin who had far more emotional depth than Emma, and of Lord Gabriel Bocastle the former outcast who's dark past is only hinted at.
I would also have liked for her to sum up more of the other Bocastle's lives if this was indeed the end.
So, pretty quick read, hot love scenes but nothing more than fluff

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for 6 Aug 2007
By G. Heyburn - Published on Amazon.com

Having read the other books in this series, I was anxiously waiting for this one to be released. Both the hero and heroine have been featured as background characters in the earlier books of this series. Emma, a recurring character in all of the previous books, could always be counted on to be the epitome of prim and proper. To have her radically depart from what has always been the very essence of her being and behave as all of the Boscastles before her just didn't ring true for me. Maybe if I hadn't read the earlier books, I wouldn't have had believability issues with the newly sensuous Emma, but I just couldn't help but thinking that maybe it is time for the author, who is one of my favorites, to begin a new series and leave the beloved Boscastles behind.

2.0 out of 5 stars It can't end like this 9 Aug 2007

When is Gabriel's story coming? I was very disappointed. I have read all six books and the series needs to end better than this!!! She must write Gabriel's (the cousin's story) in order to help banish this mess of an ending to the series.
