Product Description

Product Description

One of the most tragic stories of the 1990’s rock world was that of singer Shannon Hoon, and his band, Blind Melon. Despite scoring one of the decade’s most enduring singles and videos, “No Rain,”and a quadruple platinum hit with their 1992 self-titled debut album (in addition to touring alongside rock’s biggest names), Hoon could not overcome a dangerous drug addiction. Only two records into a promising career, Hoon was dead from an overdose at the age of 28. ‘A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other’ is the first book to tell the group’s story—culled from over 50 exclusive interviews (including the surviving band members and those closest to the band) and featuring many never-before-seen photos. “I am honored that Greg has painstakingly accounted for what the hell happened during those crazy times. He has summed up all the chaos, jubilation, and paranoia that is Blind Melon.” -Brad Smith, Blind Melon bassist

An excellent read 25 May 2011
Format:Paperback
OK then, here's a disclaimer before I begin. I love Blind Melon so this is going to be somewhat biased.
The booked is well researched and is made up of quotes around a variety of subjects which allows the reader to dip in and out pretty easily. That said, I was in hospital so read the book in a day. Unlike many band biographies except for the Shannon Hoon quotes (and a couple of others) this is new material gathered by the author. It is insightful and thoughtful and well recommended.
My only criticism is that he should have had a proof reader who knows the difference between affect and effect.

I have recently read Greg Prato's book Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other, and quite honestly say I never enjoyed reading a book as much as I did with this one. I particularly enjoyed reading all kinds of peoples account's of the Brilliance that was Blind Melon. The sheer highs and lows that was reported was completely compelling. From start to finish I have been completely hooked, a big pat on the back to you Mr Greg Prato. As a massive Blind Melon fanatic I am gutted that I never thought of it before he did! Must of been very interesting researching and interviewing members from one of your favourite bands?

Thanks again. The last couple of weeks have been great.

Long Live the Blind Melon legacy!

As a longtime Blind Melon fan it was going to take a very special book to do justice to this great band, but after compiling tales from everyone close to the group, Greg Prato has done just that. Honestly depicting the real life dramas of Shannon Hoon and co., 'A Devil On One Shoulder..' is a warts-and-all accounting of one of rock n'roll's last truly intriguing stories, and as such is a page-turner extraordinaire.
