Product Description

CD Description

A Special Edition collection of Jamie Cullum tracks recorded for Candid Records. Released to celebrate Candid’s 50th anniversary. Jamie Cullum was just twenty two years old when he signed for Candid and the time he was working around the clubs and pubs accompanied by long time associates and friends Geoff Gascoyne on bass and Sebastiaan de Krom on drums. This was the Trio that made the Candid album Pointless Nostalgic which became an instant hit and set Jamie on the road to universal acclaim (no pun intended!) Geoff and Seb's influence and support for Jamie was considerable over their years together the three musicians developed a close bond. This album features tracks from Geoff Gascoyne’s own album “Keep it to yourself” as well as a guest track from Bob Dorough – a constant source of inspiration for the young Cullum. Tracks: Devil May Care / I Can’t Get Started / God Only Knows / Love Won’t Let Me Wait / Lookin’ Good / Well You Needn’t / It Ain’t Necessarily So / Too Close For Comfort / Guest Track By Bob Dorough: Small Day Tomorrow / In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning

Jamie and others 29 Oct 2011

I bought this to get a copy of Jamie singing God only knows, which is great and is worth buying for this track.
Rgere is a good jazz feel to the album. I was not so keen on tracks that feature other vocalists. All the arrangements are great.

Although all but a few songs are on Pointless Nostalgia, this is a first-class album. In fact, the songs not on Pointless Nostalgia are some of the best on here, including 'God Only Knows'. As a fan I've purchased both. If you're an interested first-timer, pick and choose then see how it goes from there. They are both worthwhile albums.

The two star review shouldn't tarnish your decision to purchase. David Powell is right to inform the unaware, but he has misrepresented the quality of this product.

Rehash alert! 23 April 2010
Format:Audio CD
This release by Candid is more than a little odd. It is odd because 7 out of the 10 recordings on this album also featured on Jamie Cullum's first album Pointless Nostalgic (another Candid release).

In the shuffle six tracks have been dropped (You And The Night And The Music, You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You, Pointless Nostalgic, High And Dry, A Time For Love and I Want To Be A Popstar) and have been replaced with just three new tracks (God Only Knows, Love Won't Let Me Wait and Small Day Tomorrow).

Not only do the new tracks stylistically mismatch, but they are also not as good as the tracks they replaced. Even worse, two of the dropped tracks (Pointless Nostalgic and High And Dry) were among the best on his first album.

Simply put, if you don't have Pointless Nostalgic, then buy this instead of Devil May Care. If you do own Pointless Nostalgic, then don't bother with Devil May Care as most of the tracks are the same.
