2.0 out of 5 stars Devil misses the mark. 18 Dec. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Devil is a novelette about Magdalene, a 22 year old girl and James, her lover.

This book starts off okay about a couple having an adult relationship. Then it becomes rather odd and stretches the reader's belief. This is followed by supernatural scenes leaving you more confused about this book's direction. When I got to the end I thought "what the devil was this all about"?

I got little reading pleasure from this book as I felt I was being led up the garden path. I did not like it's structure or the writing style. It started off okay with a little promise but slowly went downhill. The ending was very poor and just left me feeling disappointed. Devil misses the mark, I will vote it only 2 stars and I suggest you give it the MISS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short and ragged 22 Mar. 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Devil tells the tale of abuse victim Magdelene as she struggles to free herself from her sadistic lover James.

This is very graphic in parts but the story itself seems to just meander to a pointless conclusion.

Quite a shame as it starts off quite well but the ending just seems rushed (even for a short story).

Read it if you have a spare half an hour but don't expect too much.

Made no sense at all. Characters are shallow and the story line was a joke. Don't waste your time reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow start, but a great paranormal thriller. 12 Sept. 2012

THIS STORY HAS A LOT OF STRONG LANGUAGE AND SEXUAL MATERIAL, but it is used to establish the plot. Great freaky ending, and great imagery through-out. It is a fast, satisfying, read. I read it in an hour, and expierenced a fun build up of tension and resolution. It is a fast paced but descriptive story. I do recommend this to anyone who can stomach sexual imagery and is a fan of paranormal fiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, bad ending 19 Sept. 2012

This book is about a woman who escapes an abusive relationship spiritually, but not in the God-like sense. BE WARNED! The abuse is extremely explicit. I enjoyed the book until the ending, which just didn't make sense and did not fit with the story.
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story! Great Author! 30 Jan. 2013

Highly explicit sexual scenes. The torture scenes of the book also were graphic which honestly, as messed up as it sounds makes for an amazing book. Nothing was sugar coated in the slightest. Character development was mysterious, enigmatic (as described) Magdelene, an average girl in her 20's, James the enigmatic one, and Emma the mysterious one. The ending by the way, despite other reviews, actually was good, and DID in fact make sense. If you still don't understand it the first time through, I suggest reading it again and again until you do. Great story, I can't wait to read Darling, and any other books by this author!

Devil by J. Paul Stephens
Reviewed by Michala T.
Magdalene has been single for too long. When she meets James at a party she is both excited and cautious at how forward he is in his conversation. He immediately asks her out again and she accepts. The story thrusts the reader forward through lessons that she has learned.
We soon realize that James is one of those bullies who abuse their women. Magdalene is forced to do some pretty awful things on her birthday when James gives her a `gift'. She suffers through the experience and even dissociates herself from the scene. After the birthday gift is given and James has his way with her yet again, he tells her that he expects her to resign from her nursing position.
James has now taken away from her every aspect including home, family, money, and now job. He owns her and she belongs to him and only him. She is now trapped in a constant state of humiliation and is prepared to die from his abuse.
When she goes to tell her employer she is resigning she experiences something similar to spiritual awakening and fights to find a way out of the life under her tormentor.
This is a novelette; a very quick read. The story is twisted, and very dark. Immediately there exists a strong sexual and very explicit feeling and the language is definitely not meant for young eyes. Although many critics would complain that the story is too brief it is meant to be exactly that. Do not go into this expecting a well-rounded, nice long comfortable read. It is a short story; the character development is enough to see what problems are presented and how the solutions are obtained.
I had a bit of a difficult time understanding the spiritual aspects of this and the character Emma at times seemed more knowledgeable one moment and very much at a beginner's stage the next. I would have preferred a more stableness with her character however I understood the difference in character by the end of the story.
A unique `freakish' twist of a tale and I think every bit worth the .99 I spent to read it. Ashley Torbeck has an awesome interview with the writer if you are interested in reading more of his stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Dark, twisted, and kinky Read 24 Sept. 2012
By mcnapac - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story is Dark, twisted, and very.... very kinky. I loved the story but would have liked it to be longer with a touch more back ground information about "the one" and I want to know more about the heroine, the how's and why's she was picked / chosen. The ending was odd also but it fit with the nature of the story and left me wanting more. I hope there will be more stories involving this girl.
