4.0 out of 5 stars The devil is loose 25 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
WHen I heard this song on a German show I was smitten hopelessly devoted to the voice...
This is a nice pop disco synth album similar to the early Donna Summer opuses
only neither Ashta Puthli nor Claudja Barry her soul sisters made it to do their talent justice...

I wanted to hear more Asha Puthli albums and recommend the previous albums Asha and She Loves To Her The Music too
the later have proved more experimental and mostly inconsistently not serving her voice her talent nor her career either...

I had order the CD directly from ms Puthli's site who still owes me one of them despite reminders.
The quality is that of the vinyl since it is clear the recordings are home made vinyl to CD
but of good quality still...

2.0 out of 5 stars I should have bought it on vinyl 24 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
The 'Devil is Loose' is a decent enough record with it's spacedisco grooves and Puthli's voice reminding of the great Minnie Ripperton, but the CD release leaves a lot to be desired... It has no artwork designed for this version, thus it is housed in a cd-box with only a copy of the vinyl-cover instead of a booklet and nothing more... Very poor. The CD itself looks like it's a cheap printable DIY-copy and the sound is not on the level of the current possibilities of remastering... I wish I'd gone for the vinyl version. Asha Puthli ought to take care of her own legacy a bit better.

Her music itself is beautiful with comfortably mellow disco flavor. However, in my case, somehow this album wss not CD, but CDr with no complete artwork in the case. It is disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALL MUSIC GUIDE REVIEW 8 Oct 2009

ALL MUSIC GUIDE review - "Asha Puthli" (1973)

The debut long-player by Indian-born and Euro-bred soul singer Asha Puthli is a wild mix of electric, funky grooves and mystic spaceship R&B. Puthli, who contributed vocals to Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction album, and Columbia tried to establish herself as an international pop star with this album. Utilizing her wide range and weird voice and an even stranger choice of material, Puthli came off as some soul singer turned sexy jazz maven who was beating a slick path to the dancefloor with sensibility not unlike Donna Summer's a few years later. This isn't so odd in and of itself, but when you consider her song choices: George Harrison's "I Dig Love," J.J. Cale's "Right Down Here" and "Lies," Jimmy Webb's "This Is Your Life," and Jim Weatherly's "Neither One Of Us Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye," among others, and arrangements and backing that don't even closely resemble the originals, you have one very strange album. The best track is "Lies," which is full of screaming, wailing, yelling, and completely freakazoid echo, compression, and phase shifter effects -- before Giorgio Moroder made them standard on every record. Puthli's jazzed-up rendition of Neil Sedaka's "I Am a Song" that steams over into an anthemic disco romp is a riot. This may be an album of its time, but Puthli is an original as a singer. She's a stylist at the very least, and, at most, a campy genius. - Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
