overlooked classic 26 Nov 2004
Format:Audio CD
It seems amazing that the Inspiral Carpets was the Madchester band that survived longest, supplying better and better albums as time went by (OK Charlatans were from Northwich). This is their last and arguably best effort with songs like I want you, Saturn 5 or Just Wednesday being top tunes. This is a mature pop album, being the logical conclusion of their devopment of the style they accepted in Madchester heyday. It seems that this style could not be perfected only emulated the split in the band was a natural and healthy move. They created their ultimate album and went graciously.

I decided to download this album after recently selling my entire cd collection and I am pleased to say that I wasn't disappointed.

In my opinion the entire collection of songs in this album makes this possibly the inspirals finest hour although I am a big fan of Revenge of the Goldfish.

The stand out tracks are: I Want You, Plutoman, Uniform, Saturn 5, Lovegrove, Just Wednesday, I dont want to go blind and the belting Cobra. I make that 8 classic songs which is the same as what some bands release on one album.........you have just got to listen to Plutoman Just Wednesday and Cobra.....I give this 9/10

As one of the most interesting bands to come out of Manchester (kind of), the inspirals always kept you wondering what would come next. First, the furious psychedelia of Life, the darker, longer Beast Inside. Then they take a more abbrasive assault on Revenge Of The Goldfish, placing a little more emphasis on guitars. Now they decide to take all those sounds and put it on one LP, Devil Hopping. Shear genius is what results. The listener is first attacked by the ferocious guitars in I WANT YOU. "Is this the inspirals ?" you ask, for there is not an organ to be found in the entire song. From there on it only gets better. All the elements are there from Life (UNIFORM, SATURN 5), Beast Inside (PLUTOMAN, THE WAY THE LIGHT FALLS, I DON'T WANT TO GO BLIND) and Revenge (everything else). If one were going have one album from these guys, this should be it. It has it all. The drumming is sharp and effective, the bass is perfect, and their organ-playing finally complements the music instead of interfering with it. Nothing against Life, an awesome album, but they simply used it a bit much. They proved after that, though, that they're much more than just another Brit-pop band. "Colours and music is what you will see and you'll live for, Take a ride" with the inspirals and you're bound to enjoy the journey.
