Joe R. Lansdale's heroes returned after an absence of a few years in Vanilla Ride, and Devil Red is in part a continuance of that, with a cross-over with Leather Maiden thrown in for good measure (bringing to mind thoughts about seeing ourselves as others see us, as a hero in one book can be not much more than an annoyance in another). Our main men Hap and Leonard get mixed up with another hired assassin when asked to investigate the murder of the scion of a well-off family. One damned thing leads to another, with lots of violence and laughs along the way, until finally a wavering Hap has to get his mojo back or face the consequenses. Predictably there are some old friends and old enemies met along the way - having read Vanilla Ride fairly recently might be helpful, but not vital.
Reading Devil Red will liven up a few hours, and leave the reader satisfied, and (hopefully) wanting more.
