Product Description

Product Description

Remember the first time you saw Japanese comics? The excitement. The buzz. The sales! Here comes the next big thing - storytelling and comics from India. Devi (pronounced Day-vee) is India's first super-hero. Tara Mehta, an unsuspecting young woman in the futuristic Indian city, Sitapur is the Devi. She has no idea that she is about to become the centerpiece of a divine battle between the Gods of Light and the demon Lord Bala. Devi is a powerhouse of a story about a young woman battling for survival in a landscape of ancient legends, duty and fate. She walks the line between tradition, destiny and free will. Where will she fall? Between the Divine and the Diabolical there is Devi.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looking Forward to the Future, 10 Sep 2007
By AG Stephenson "andrewjoychris" (Newhaven England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's great to see a strong new comic book company - in this case backed by the billions of Richard Branson.

This series has a very strong central character - much like Alan Moore's Promethea - but instead of the new age psycho-babble of Alan Moore at his worst, this series has 3000 years of the characters from the Vedic scriptures as back-up material - it therefore has lots of potential for the future. Devi is a goddess. In fact, in Indian mythology, all goddesses are manifestations of Shakta, the female essence of the Universe and Devi is this manifestation in human form. In this graphic novel, Devi looks remarkably like beautiful Bollywood movie actress Priyanka Chopra, which is fair because I also consider her to be a goddess. I wonder if Priyanka is related to Gotham and Deepak Chopra, the creators of Virgin Comics? Probably not - it's a common name.

This first collection really does little more than introduce the main characters and it's fine - but it does move very slowly - too much emphasis on spectacular artframes and not enough on plot and developing sub-plot.

One of the weaknesses of many modern graphic novels is the obsession with colour - I would like to see Virgin produce cheaper, monochrome, plot-driven pieces - there's a discipline that can be learned from that.

But all-in-all, a good beginning and I'm looking forward to seeing the characters develop further in Book 2.
