Product Description

Product Description

This second edition of Madeleine Portwood's successful manual aims to give parents, teachers and health professionals the confidence to diagnose and assess dyspraxia. Most importantly, it offers them an intervention program that will significantly improve the cognitive functioning of the dyspraxic child or teenager.

Updated in light of the author's new and extensive research, the book provides the reader with background information on the neurological basis of the condition; strategies for identification, diagnosis and assessment; proven programs of intervention that can be monitored by anyone closely involved with the child; strategies to improve curricular attainments; remediation activities to develop perceptual and motor skills; programs to develop self-esteem; and information about where to find help.

This book does not dwell greatly on ideals or hypotheses, nor on soothing chat. The reader will find practical, well-organized information on a good variety of ways to assess and train a child's abilities without highly specialized equipment.

I was impressed by the differences that generalized training in motor skills seemed to make in specific tasks such as handwriting, and also by the reports that "normal" children helping with lunchtime training programs enjoyed the experience, and felt closer to the previously isolated "clumsy" children, with their associated tendency to be irritable and easily distracted (not to mention distracting!). The scope of the book really does cover both parents and schools -- this book is grounded in solid observation and experience.

Ms. Portwood stresses that intervention helps at all ages, often bolstering self-esteem and social skills along with growing achievement in motor skills.I am looking forward to using this book with my son.

I believe that Dyspraxia is also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder in the U.S.

This book is a Godsend, it is written in a no nonsense way, as was observed in a previous review.

My daughter has battled with Dyspraxia since the day she was born, in the early stages we simply didn't know what the problem was, in fact it is only latterly that we found out. To a degree she has been ostracised because of the condition, other children do not understand that she has to work twice as hard as them to achieve half of what they do. Despite this she has a sunny personality that shines through.

When I read chapter 5 'Research Evidence' I couldn't put this book down, here was an answer to a problem I'd been striving to find. I immediately contacted my daughter's school and asked if they would be willing to try something similar. My daughter attends a small rural school in Devon, no backwater, for the staff in her school are highly motivated and immediately agreed to a pilot scheme during every lunch hour, to help my daughter and any children like her, using older children as mentors to help them understand the difficulties children like my daughter face daily. The pilot starts this week, who'd have thought simply reading a book would lead to this? Hat's off to East Worlington School, The Head and her staff! I only use a pen name to protect my daughter's identity, amazing book! well worth the read!

Madeleine Portwood's book is the classic text on dyspraxia. The facts are clearly presented. There are case studies that help you understand dyspraxia and its potential to affect so many aspects of your child's life. There are very useful suggestions for easy-to-do therapeutic activities that may help your child to further develop his/her abilities. If you want to buy one book on dyspraxia, I'd recommend this one. (My second recommendation would be "Can't Play, Won't Play" also on Amazon).
