I bought this, was shocked about the smell and made a study: here what I came upon. Even if they say it's safe it's still toxic - any of these foam mats, they sell it only because there are not enough law regulations!!! PLEASE READ:
Play mats are made of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and poly ethylene (PE), normally safe and tasteless chemicals. However, to make the mats extra soft many manufacturers add formamide, a common swelling agent. "When too much is added, the mats take on an odd odor," said Dong Jinshi, the secretary general of IFPA.
However, there is no law regulating acceptable formamide levels in plastic mats and no product description to warn what levels could be dangerous.
"If you choose to put down soft foam puzzle-piece mats for your children, be sure to smell the product. The stronger its odor, the more formaimde it contains."
From wikipedia: Safety(!!!):
Formamide is highly corrosive on contact with skin or eyes and may be deadly if ingested. Inhalation of large amounts of formamide vapor may require medical attention. It is also a teratogen. Formamide should never be handled without proper safety attire including gloves and goggles.
Teratology is the study of abnormalities of physiological development. It is often thought of as the study of human birth defects, but it is much broader than that, taking in other non-birth developmental stages, including puberty; and other non-human life forms, including plants. A newer term developmental toxicity includes all manifestations of abnormal development, not only frank terata. These may include growth retardation or delayed mental development without any structural malformations.
