Product Description

Nothing stimulates young babies like bold black and white shapes. We know, and that's why we've worked together with child development experts to create this unique and exclusive baby play mat. With it's fascinating black and white printed shapes, this baby play mat is designed to stimulate babies brains and aid baby development in the early stages. It's perfect for encouraging your baby to roll, lie on their tummy and sit up on their own. It also means no bumps on hard floors. Each set has 12 interlocking foam pieces that fit together to make a mat measuring 3ft x 4ft (or it can be put together in any shape you choose). The baby play mats are made from EVA - the same material as flip flops. This means they are very soft, durable and lightweight. And unlike other play mats that you have to keep putting in the washing machine (as if you didn't have enough washing already!) these are completely wipe clean. So if your child dribbles, spills food, is sick or worse, all you need is a baby wipe to make it as good as new. You can even use it to change nappies on. The mats are also ideal for parents or carers with children who have special needs. The designs are highly stimulating and they make a great surface for regular physio.

I bought this when my son was a couple of months old as we have cold wooden floors, and initially thought it was great. However, I now find now that the white patterns, which are painted on with some sort of rubber-type paint, are peeling off. Admittedly, we have used it nearly every day for about 6 months, but I do not think it is safe if the paint peels off, as everything he finds ends up in his mouth. Very disappointing for the price.

Can't use it 27 Dec 2008
Dissapointing. I bought this mat for my 11 week old daughter in order for her to start simple exercises like lying on her tummy. It came and texture wise it is perfect with one huge BUT. It has a very chemical smell to it. I tryed leaving it outside over night and it didn't help. I washed it - didn't help either. As a result I cannot use it. So new moms beware.

IF IT SMELLS IS TOXIC 15 April 2012

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I bought this, was shocked about the smell and made a study: here what I came upon. Even if they say it's safe it's still toxic - any of these foam mats, they sell it only because there are not enough law regulations!!! PLEASE READ:

Play mats are made of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and poly ethylene (PE), normally safe and tasteless chemicals. However, to make the mats extra soft many manufacturers add formamide, a common swelling agent. "When too much is added, the mats take on an odd odor," said Dong Jinshi, the secretary general of IFPA.

However, there is no law regulating acceptable formamide levels in plastic mats and no product description to warn what levels could be dangerous.

"If you choose to put down soft foam puzzle-piece mats for your children, be sure to smell the product. The stronger its odor, the more formaimde it contains."

From wikipedia: Safety(!!!):

Formamide is highly corrosive on contact with skin or eyes and may be deadly if ingested. Inhalation of large amounts of formamide vapor may require medical attention. It is also a teratogen. Formamide should never be handled without proper safety attire including gloves and goggles.

Teratology is the study of abnormalities of physiological development. It is often thought of as the study of human birth defects, but it is much broader than that, taking in other non-birth developmental stages, including puberty; and other non-human life forms, including plants. A newer term developmental toxicity includes all manifestations of abnormal development, not only frank terata. These may include growth retardation or delayed mental development without any structural malformations.
