Product Description

Product Description

Using language understandable to those without an engineering background and avoiding complex mathematical formulae, Bill Gunston explains the differences between gas-turbine, jet, rocket, ramjet and helicopter turboshaft aero engines and traces their histories from the early days through to today's complex and powerful units as used in the latest wide-bodied airliners and high performance military jets.

4.0 out of 5 stars How both the engine and the industry work, 7 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Accessible and interesting to professional and amateur alike. The structure of the book enables you to follow the historic developments or the logic of the construction of the engine. Gunston manages to convey the technical characteristics with the need for mathematics, but never talks down to his reader. Recommended for anyone who is a manager in the industry...they will never be phased again by the specialists who themselves might not know as much about the whole engine as Gunston.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative and accessible even for non-engineers., 28 Jul 2002
I can only agree with the synopsis's summary of this book. The first half of the book explains how they work (in detail) and the second half reviews the historical development, from the modest start to the very latest developments. Being an animal physiologist (without any training as an engineer) I think it's safe to recommend this book to anyone with the slightest interest in aero engines. Written by an acknowledged expert it still manages to be (relatively) easy to read.
