Product Description

Product Description

Developing Your Watercolours is a practical, structured course for watercolour painters with some experience – continuing where the very successful Watercolour Landscape Course (published in 1993 and reprinted 7 times) left off.

Fully illustrated with David Bellamy’s evocative watercolours, the book follows a similar approach to Watercolour Landscape Course and is divided into four main sections:

The preparatory planning stages, with advice on choosing materials and working on location

Guidelines on how to give your paintings more impact through imaginative composition, lighting and mood

More exciting watercolour techniques

Specific projects and exhibition work

Also included are a number of practical exercises, relating to paintings featured in a gallery at the end of the book, and several step-by-step demonstrations.

From the Back Cover

IN 'DEVELOPING YOUR WATERCOLOURS' DAVID BELLAMY SHOWS HOW TO BUILD ON YOUR EXISTING PAINTING SKILLS TO PRODUCE INSPIRED WATER-COLOURS THAT ARE FULL OF VITALITY AND ATMOSPHERE.

'Developing Your Watercolours' is a sequel to David Bellamy's best-selling 'Watercolour Landscape Course'. It is aimed at those who already have some experience in water-colour painting, although much of the book will also be of interest and value to beginners and more experienced artists alike.

In 'Developing your Watercolours' the emphasis is on the importance of direct observation and on those techniques that will enable you to build on your existing skills and sufficiently raise the standard of your work. The book is structured to encourage a sense of achievement at every stage:
• the first selection concentrates on suitable art materials and how to get the most out of sketching and painting on location
• the second section in concerned with using source material effectively to give your work greater visual impact
• the third section explores colour and techniques for creating a powerful sense of atmosphere and vitality in your work
• the fourth section looks at ways of continuing your progress, exhibiting your work and exploring new directions

A key feature of the book is the series of practical exercises, linked to a gallery of paintings at the end of the book. These exercises, together with several step-by-step demonstrations, offer an ideal opportunity for putting newly learned skills into practice, as well as providing numerous possibilities for interpreting painting subjects creatively.

'Developing your Watercolours' is superbly illustrated with David Bellamy's evocative paintings, a marvellous source of inspiration for all aspiring watercolourists. It is also full of practical information on how to develop the skills needed to produce water-colours that have that elusive quality – something special.

David Bellamy is well known for his atmospheric water-colours of the landscape. He is a member of the British Watercolour Society and his paintings can be found in private collections around the world. Highly regarded as a teacher of art, he has a tremendous following among leisure painters, many of whom have attended his extremely popular courses for watercolourists. He also gives demonstrations and talks, and has produced a number of successful videos on water-colour painting.

I live in France and don't like the heat so last summer I thought I would like to do something really worthwhile with the 6 weeks I am holed up in my house keeping out of the heat. Painting out of doors is no longer an option so I thought I'd work my way systematically through this book.

Unlike most watercolour books it doesn't labour on about brushes and basic techniques, wax resist and lifting out, it really is aimed at the improver - and there are so few books out there which are! What it won't tell you for example is how to paint a tree - for that you need a beginner's book

I particurlarly liked the fact (unlike most other painting books) that you get the original photo from which to paint, then at the back of the book is the gallery of his paintings so you can see how he has tackled the same photo. You begin to see not just what he has left out or added in but that he has perhaps used a limited palette or that colours are from half of the colour wheel or all warm or cool colours. Most artists seem to like to keep their secrets about how to get from the original scene to finished painting. This book is complete and a fabulous learning tool.

Outstanding book!
