Product Description

Product Description

Microsoft Office continues to "grow up" as a productivity and development platform, so that it is now one of the most powerful such platforms on the market for business applications. It consists of hundreds of programmable objects developers can use to create powerful custom applications -- far more quickly than building them from scratch. Peter Aitken begins by reviewing Microsoft Office 2000's applications, the components developers can use, and the basics of development with Office components. Next, he shows how to master the fundamentals of VBA, the programming language that provides the "glue" needed to build custom Office solutions. He reviews the components associated with Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, FrontPage, and Outlook -- and the Shared Components accessible to all of them. And, finally, he walks the developer through the construction of four real-world Office applications, with an emphasis on using the power of Office on the Web and corporate intranets.

From the Back Cover

The Professional's Guide to Developing Custom Solutions with Office 2000!

Having used VBA for many years I thought this book might give me an insight into how I might use VBA to integrate the main Office applications. However, whilst the book seems to be great at introducing you to VBA, and gives a good level of detail, it is not going to be useful for a developer who is already pretty familiar with VBA.

Highly Recommended 15 Jun 2000
By Meg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book really opened my eyes about writing programs for Office. I knew you could record little macros but I had no idea how much great custom programming is possible. I really like getting the different programs to work together. This book made it all pretty easy. It has clear explanations and the writing style is easy to read. There is lots of example code, too. I recommend it highly.

Good book 22 Oct 2000

I liked this book quite a bit. It covers the material well and the author does a fair, but adequate job of explaining the concepts. All in all it will serve you well.

This book seems to skip around quite a bit, but there is always a lot of material to cover.

One of the best books on Office Automation and getting things to work together is Learn Word 2000 VBA Document Automation (author: driza). Another book that some people liked (and some people didn't!) was by Steven Roman on Developing Office Add-ins. Roman's Word macro book is also fair.

terrible book 12 Jun 2003
By Michael R Mayer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I don't generally complaing about books so much, but this one I feel like burning. It was so skimpy in its coverage of each topic, that I found it pretty much useless. 30 pages about microsoft word - not very much, IMO. I would reommend Michael Kofler's "Definitive Guide to Excel VBA" (Apress) for Excel. Possibly Guy Hard-Davis "Word 2000 Developer's Handbook" (Sybex) for Word. And MS-online help for the other applications, i guess. Others have had better luck with this book it seems, so good luck in your own choice!
