Product Description

Product Description

Many problems encountered by engineers developing code for specialized Symbian subsystems boil down to a lack of understanding of the core Symbian programming concepts. Developing Software for Symbian OS remedies this problem as it provides a comprehensive coverage of all the key concepts. Numerous examples and descriptions are also included, which focus on the concepts the author has seen developers struggle with the most. The book covers development ranging from low–level system programming to end user GUI applications. It also covers the development and packaging tools, as well as providing some detailed reference and examples for key APIs. The new edition includes a completely new chapter on platform security.

The overall goal of the book is to provide introductory coverage of Symbian OS v9 and help developers with little or no knowledge of Symbian OS to develop as quickly as possible. There are few people with long Symbian development experience compared to demand, due to the rapid growth of Symbian in recent years, and developing software for new generation wireless devices requires knowledge and experience of OS concepts. This book will use many comparisons between Symbian OS and other OSes to help in that transition.

Get yourself ahead with the perfect introduction to developing software for Symbian OS.

From the Back Cover

Developing Software for Symbian OS 2nd Edition is an essential guide for anyone wishing to start developing smartphone applications. The original book has been updated to cover Symbian OS v9 and changes to the developer environment, and now includes a new chapter on application signing and platform security.

Steve Babin′s clear and practical approach made his original book very popular with those new to Symbian OS. An invaluable resource, Developing Software for Symbian OS 2nd Edition includes sections about the architecture of Symbian OS, the build environment, Symbian OS strings, buffers and data collections, platform security, asynchronous programming using active objects and threads, the client–server framework and GI application programming.

The book describes and solves the challenges a beginner faces and introduces the key concepts needed to create applications for Symbian smartphones. It provides clear advice and practical solutions, and full sample code is available for download from the Symbian Developer Network website (developer.symbian.com).

Get yourself ahead with  the perfect introduction to developing software for Symbian OS.

5.0 out of 5 stars From complete beginner to broadly educated developer, 7 April 2008
By Warren Day (London UK) - See all my reviews
A first wise best-friend to gently hold your hand for the first several months, if you are completely new and alone when it comes to both Symbian OS and the basics of the Symbian approach to design and development: from coding standards, memory management, platform security, string classes, GUI programming, client server architecture and asynchronous programming, all the way through to build environment practicalities.

Plus the forward on page xi has the most exciting, inspiring, thought provoking and insightful overview I've read on smartphones, and how they fit into the way modern life is evolving.
