Françoise Grellet's 9-page introduction provides a helpful summary of the main text-types, reasons for reading and skills employed in reading. Especially helpful are the 4 pages describing the important considerations to be borne in mind when designing reading comprehension exercises for learners of second languages.
I would highly recommend "Developing Reading Skills"
(1) to trainee language teachers who need to summarize text-types, purposes and sub-skills in answering questions on the teaching of reading comprehension in training exams such as The Cambridge CELTA or DELTA.
(2) to more experienced teachers, especially those in posts involving English for Specific Purposes, who are ready to rise to the challenge of selecting reading material and designing associated exercises which truly reflect their learners' interests and purposes. This challenge involves hard work, but Françoise Grellet's categories and practical examples offer helpful starting-points.
I am fairly familiar with the literature on teaching reading in the second language classroom. Although Françoise Grellet's book dates back to 1981, it reflects early attempts in language teaching methodology to focus on specific skills and purposes in addition to General English. "Developing Reading Skills" is a book for the practising language teacher, helpful to those who are sufficiently hard-working and have the time to produce tailor-made lesson content. The author does not speculate tediously on philosophical concerns (e.g. endless definitions of vague terms such as "task", "process" or "communication"!). I cannot recommend a better resource for the purposes described above.
