Product Description

Review

"In this book we offer the informed and reflective practitioner as the ideal agent for mediating between the practice and theory of language teaching. Some of the contributors might be labelled teachers, some materials developers, some applied linguists, some teacher trainers and some publishers, but all of them share four things in common: they have all had experience as teachers of a second or foreign language, they have all contributed to the development of second language materials, they have are all well informed about developments in linguistic and psycholinguistic theory and they all have respect for the teacher as the person with the power to decide what actually happens in the classroom." --Brian Tomlinson

Product Description

This sequel to "Materials Development in Language Teaching" suggests that the informed and reflective practitioner is the ideal agent for mediating between the practice and theory of language teaching. The contributors are teachers, materials developers, applied linguists, teacher trainers and publishers, sharing four things in common: experience as teachers of a second or foreign language, contribution to the development of second language materials, knowledge of developments in linguistic and psycholinguistic theory, and respect for the teacher as the person with the power to decide what actually happens in the classroom. The text is a course book for materials development courses, a resource book for teachers working on materials development, a follow up book for workshops on the subject, and a stimulus book for in-service practitioners.

Great for specialists 16 July 2009
By Andrew Finch - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book makes an important addition to the insubstantial amount of literature on ELT materials design. In view of the necessity for ELT teachers to supplement textbooks or make their own materials to match the special needs of their students, such additions are to be welcomed. As with Tomlinson's other book on this topic, Materials development in language teaching, the theory of materials design is covered comprehensively and sensitively, given the important socio-cultural issues involved. If you are looking for a book that will ground you firmly in the necessary concepts and approaches, this book will be an excellent addition to your library. If you are looking for something that will provide a practical introduction for students and over-worked teachers, then perhaps you will have to produce your own instructional materials, using this book as a benchmark.

Just buy it. 24 Feb 2011

I have been using the book for six weeks and went ahead and ordered it. I could live without it, but overall its a good book. Here you can read about how different teachers approach the teaching of language features. How should you teach vocabulary? read Nation, Stranks, and Bolitho for more ideas. just buy the book if you are a teacher and are not strong in theories or methods. Owning this book will make you smarter. If you never heard of the three names I mentioned and also you are an ESL or EFL teacher, this book will sharpen your mind and skills. Just buy it. I did, finally. OK, if you are too poor to own this book, go to google books, find it, and add it to your library. The missing pages won't hurt you. If the subjects interest you, you can go to the web to learn more. There, you get a free college level MATESOL course for FREE! Why buy it. If you want to have the book handy as a reference or just like reading in bed with an old fashioned lamp light. Who am I. I am in a MATESOL program This book is recommended for anyone interested in developing materials for teaching. It's not a how to book, but a why book. So, make yourself smarter. Go tell your friends what you think of Paul Nation's vocabulary building ideas and talk about extensive reading with your peers. Know the truth about extensive reading. There is so much more in this book. Just buy it.
