Product Description

Review

"Baham and Maffini use a series of narrative examples to illustrate how important both teacher and pupil EQ can be for learning to most effectively take place. The book as a whole is very readable and an excellent resource for teachers new to the concept of emotional intelligence, and who are wishing to gain practical examples of how they could develop both their own and their pupils' emotional intelligence." Learning and Teaching Update, May 2009

A brilliant and essential book for teachers! Many teachers know the important role of emotions in learning and question how they can best support the emotional needs of their pupils - this book has some valuable answers. `Developing children's emotional intelligence' can assist teachers when there are the academic, behavioural, social and emotional concerns in the classroom. The book clearly explains relevant EQ theory and research and the importance of teaching EQ in schools. It offers a wide variety of creative activities that can be easily understood and implemented by busy teachers. The choice of activities means that all teachers can find something to suit their subject or classroom. There is also guidance on how teachers can enhance their own Emotional intelligence. The beauty of this book is that it translates EQ theory into practical, tried and tested activities that can be used straightaway in classrooms to support the social and emotional growth of children. With thought-provoking quotes and their passion for EQ, the authors of this book inspire you to be the teacher you dreamed you could be.

This is a refreshing book with up to date research on emotional intelligence in schools. The activities are innovative and easy to implement. The book covers a range of options so that teaching emotional intelligence skills is easily implemented in any subject. The caring tone and the wonderful quotes from many of Emotional Intelligences leaders are what makes this book stand out from others. I implemented the drama exercises in my classroom recently and the students loved it! It really made a difference in our communication about sometimes difficult topics! The best chapter though is on Becoming an Emotionally Intelligent teacher. This points out that it all starts with us and that children do indeed watch what we do more that listen to what we day. The questions at the end of each chapter are also a great reflection tool for teachers.

I purchased this book for my sister in-law who is new to teaching and she absolutely loved it. Told me it has been very helpful and she frequently uses it as a reference tool in her teachings. So if you have a teacher in the family and are looking to get them something special. THIS IS IT!

A useful guide to including emotional awareness into the curriculum in a natural and unobtrusive manner - yes it depends on the skill of the teacher, but is, I believe, an extremely important area in our stress-ridden society
