Product Description

Bollywood romance. Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan) and Paro (Aishwarya Rai) are childhood sweethearts whose love is doomed from the beginning because Devdas is the son of a wealthy aristocrat while Paro's family is way down in the social scale. Devdas' father sends him abroad to study, hoping that the separation will be permanent. When he returns, Paro's mother (Kiron Kher) proposes that she and Devdas be united in marriage but is humiliated by Devdas' father. In despair, Paro offers to give herself, body and soul, to her lover, but he rejects her. Paro marries someone else and when Devdas realises what he has lost, he seeks refuge in alcohol and the arms of a prostitute, Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit).

Product Description

Set against the backdrop of rural Bengal during feudal times, Devdas is the story of a doomed love affair between Devdas (Dilip Kumar), son of the local zamindar(Landlord), a high-caste Brahmin, and Parvati (Suchitra Sen), the daughter of their neighbour, also a Brahmin, but belonging to a slightly lower status in terms of caste, affluence and status. They grow up as childhood sweethearts. But when they decide to marry, Devdas' father puts his foot down, packing his younger son off to Calcutta for higher studies. Parvati's marriage is finalized with a wealthy zamindar, a widower with children older than his young second wife. Learning about Parvati's marriage, Devdas rushes back to his village and tries to stop the marriage, in vain. Parvati is prepared to elope with him but Devdas refuses and Parvati leaves his room in the middle of the night, castigating him for his cowardice...

5.0 out of 5 stars love and and ordinairy madness 6 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Bimal roys version of Devdas is without doubt one of the cornerstones in what the west has recently decided to acknowledge as Bollywood. His handling of the narrative and ubiquitous formulaic themes of the genre to this day remains untouched. And at this point it is important to establish that even the more recent 'all singing all dancing' version of the classic is merely another offering of the'style over content' approach endemic to the genre.

Dilip Kumar's central performance again marks him as one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian Cinema. His delicay, subtle aggresiveness and desperation are perfectly balanced with the softness, graciousness and capacious love of his Paro. The film is without a doubt a gem, all elements of the formula work (an oft times difficult task). the music, lyrics, cinematography and above the dialogue all fuse to create one of the greatest meditations on unrequited love.

If you have seen the more recent madhuri, ash and shah-rukh affair please re-visit this earlier version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bimal Roy's Devdas 24 Dec 2008
Format:DVD
Either you read the book or watch the film. It is the same thing. I don't think any film director has literally put on screen every word written by the novelist. And this has produced a gem. It is a classic of Indian cinema. Every actor reach a summit in his career which he never assails that height of acting again. This is what Dilip Kumar has achieved. Never again he reached the excellence of that sublime acting again. Perhaps, he was born to play the role of Devdas. SRK, Madhuri Dixit version is a joke, insult to the author and a comical approach to the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic movie by bimal roy 15 Aug 2008
By Shiv Sharma VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Devdas is based on a bengali novella by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay written in 1917. This movie is an excellent adaptation of the novella by Bimal Roy. Dilip Kumar plays devdas, suchitra sen as paro and vyjayantimala as chandramukhi. Every actor has played his/her part lively. The music was provided by Sachin dev Burman.
This movis is one of the top movies of hindi cinema.
