5.0 out of 5 stars A DEFINITIVE LOOK AT RELIGION AND GENOCIDE, 3 Jun 2009
By Dr. U. L. Khawaja "usman khawaja" (hornchurch ,london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
a disturbing definitive look at genocide-
Govind Nihalani as the creator has disguised his movie on the premise of state sponsored terrorism in Gujrat by the state government against the ethnic muslim minority but he is truly studying the behaviour of victims ,criminals and the innocent majority that silently encourages the vicious minority by refusing to intervene while the miscreants exploit and egregiously achieve their personal motivation out of a profound human tragedy .
Amitabh Bahchan gives one of his best performances as the hindu police chief who despite wanting to protect the minority finds himself sabotaged and desperately helpless when he tries to confront the politics of an artificially created religious riot .
The victim as a muslim maiden girl played by Kareena Kapoor is another subtly perceptive as she sensitively defines the educated lower middle class girl chasing her personal dreams which get entangled in nefarious circumstances .
Nihalani does not avoid religious debate in context of his plot but does not indulge in inappropriate discussions though his visuals describe what he verbally omits in a refrained yet artistic narrative.
There is the moral ambiguity in the initiation of the dark event followed by a wholesale massacre where even the common police man is moulded by corruption to betray innocent strangers .
The riot is staged in a gruesome harrowing manner in the communal streets of a city that can be anywhere in india and the behaviour of the administration is scrutinized where both atrocities are hidden and any attempt to reprise them is crushed malevolently .
The aura of malice imbued by the cinematic milieu here is tremendous and the final monologue by Bachan is memorable in trying to echo the suppressed truth .
This is a scorching piece of cinematic truth which is also scathing critique of the deceit of politicians and administration where the commissions investigating a communal riot become the instrument of further torture themselves .
finally it is harrowing and is brilliantly executed with kareena and amitabh giving excellent performances as the muslim girl acting as the unprotected state witness and him as the honest cop who cannot bear to cover up an atrocious act even if it goes against his department and community and is a fascinating examination of human conscience in it's various perspectives ,
the pessimistic ending might leave you numb but it is also great cinema reflecting true contemporary historical events .
watch it if you dare to cross examine your own conscience as it can be a definitive moral dilemma .
one of my definite favourites from this decade .
