De Phazz are still a bit of a secret to many. True they appear on compilations but like a lot of foreign imports word of mouth appears essential to get them noticed. So why are they so good? Well - like an increasing number these days - they are a collective and as such embrace a variety of styles in the chill out genre. What is consistent irrespective of lineup are the wonderful production values, a wry and dry sense of humour and the creative intelligence to surprise those like myself who have heard a lot of the uninspiring pap that passes for chill these days. "Detunised Gravity" is not a radical departure for those familiar with this band but it does have most of the ingredients that make them so good and - in the current market - so unique. If you like cheesy, feel good or just plain stoned out intelligent music then check them out. I defy you not to like what they do.

After I discovered De-Phazz last year, I have been wondering how on earth they have managed to keep this jewel so secret! Now that they have also their 2nd (Godsdog) and 3rd album out (Death By Chocolate), I still think that D.Gravity is the best. Mellow and melancholy jazzy trip-hop, the best there is in down-tempo and/or lounge. (No wonder that they have included De-Phazz on practically every lounge-compilation there is - Supperclub presents - Lounge; Batucada; Hotel Costes I and II, Buddha Bar II; Paradisiac, Breaking The Ice..... etc etc etc)

I stumbled on this album by accident, and then it became my favourite listen for about 2 years. Here are drum and bass rhythms, ambient sounds, jazzy vocals and samples.

There's a good variety of tracks. One or two of them (particularly Little Company) began to irritate me after about the 10th time, for being piercing without much going on to hold my interest. 80% of the album is great, however, and there are some real gems (Roses being one and Hero dead and gone, another).

Subsequent albums, Godsdog and Death by Chocolate were more consistent in terms of style but I prefer Detunized Gravity for its edgier, harder sound. This is also reflected in the lyrics and choice of samples. It's not that this music is all stone-faced though; there is a good deal of serious content, but it has plenty of lighter moments. It's just that the funny tracks in Detunized gravity are witty; whereas the other albums sometimes feel silly.

Highly recommended - even if this isn't normally your kind of thing. (It wasn't mine).

Well worth getting the deluxe edition for the extra CD - some really tasty mixes, and serves as a great introduction to De Phazz!!!
