If you only know Georgette Heyer for her historical novels, you are in for a treat. She also wrote some classy, witty detective novels.

A tennis party in an English village on a hot summer's afternoon is followed by the discovery of the body of a local solicitor.

Everybody in the village seems keen to help solve the mystery. Could the murderer have been the dead man's niece, who looked after his house? Was she as innocent and saintly as she appeared? Perhaps it was the other local solicitor, who resented the fact that the deceased had taken many of his clients.

The couple at the farm had a guilty secret - what was it? And why was one of the villagers apparently determined to become the principal suspect?

Add to this the fact that the dead man seemed to have gone in for a spot of blackmail, and you have all the ingredients for a first-class thriller - with some love interest thrown in for good measure!

Heyer's characters are endearing, and she provides them with witty dialogue. You'll meet the detectives from this book in some of her other detective novels, too.

Enjoy!

I enjoy many different writers of detective fiction, but Heyer is the one that I always read more than once. With other writers such as Christie it's all about the mystery, and nothing wrong with that. With Georgette Heyer, the mystery is usually good enough to keep you guessing, but it is her charming, funny characters that are the real joy. This is particularly true with 'Detection Unlimited', which is set in a small English country village in the 1950's. You have the village bobby on his bicycle, wilting in the heat; the old-school squire and his lady; the country solicitor; the redoubtable maiden aunt; the absented-minded vicar, and many more. A real joy to read.

I have never read any of Georgette Heyers historical novels but picked up this murder mystery due to the great cover. It is an enjoyable 1930's murder mystery set against village life complete with tennis parties, not so humble servants and an unconventional detective. It is character driven, frothy light and well written - If you enjoy Agatha Christie with a touch more humour then this is an enjoyable read
