Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Marlene Dietrich purrs through sexy songs, and Jimmy Stewart succumbs to her sultry, androgynous ways in Destry Rides Again a seminal Western with more than a touch of comedy. He plays your average nice guy who turns out to have something special up his sleeve when confronted by a gang of bad guys. He tames the banditos and wins dance-hall girl Dietrich's heart with his non-violent ways. You may think you have seen this before, and most likely you have. Based on the 1930 novel by Max Brand, the plot has been copied repeatedly. However, this atmospheric 1939 delight stands far above its imitators. This is the movie in which Dietrich, wearing full saloon-gal regalia, sings, "See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have". It was remade with Audie Murphy in 1954 as Destry, but that version lacks the charisma provided by Stewart and Dietrich.--Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

Destry is one of the great movie characters, from the first moment you see his lanky form you can't help but feel a connection. When the wimp finally shows the town what a real man is it comes as no surprise but even so, the sense of glee one derives from those few, well place, bullets is worht the wait and then on repeat viewings, the anticipation. On top of all this you are also treated to the electric Frenchy, the simmering singer who has taken the town by the trousers along with old Marsh the bumbling aid who knocks at your funny bone and pulls at your sympathies. Supporting these main characters are an array of wonderful creations, rare in films of any age, which drag you into the movie and let you forget that there's a real world. Add all this to a plot and youhave one of the best movies ever made.

James Stewart is the most graceful and beautiful man that ever lived. This hysterical, touching and truly excellent film shows this almost as clearly as The Philadelphia Story. The dialogue between him and Marlene Dietrich is sharp and funny and cutting, and the fight scene with Dietrich is cinematic perfection. YOU MUST BUY THIS. If you haven't seen this film you haven't yet experienced the golden era of hollywood at its best.

Destry is a must 6 Feb 2008
By Kenny M
Format:DVD
This must stands up along side 'It's A Wonderful Life' for a quality Jimmy Stuart film. A great story: Mild mannered sheriff arrives to clean up a town run by crooks and gunslingers. Marlene Dietrich plays a superb saloon singer and 'moll', anyone who has seen 'Blazing Saddles' can see where Brookes got his character from, which is a homage rather than a lampoon. A classic western which manages to encompass suspense, comedy, romance and vivid characterization. Hollywood at its very best.
