I am surprised no one has written a review for any of bart davis' novel so thought i should. This is my first so bear with me.

The story is about the search and destroy of an american submarine stolen by turkmenistani soviets, the story takes place towards the end of the USSR, and how an American submarine Captain has to command a soviet sub manned by a soviet crew.

The relationaship between the characters is brilliant, the soviets are initially cold but warm to the Americans no nonsense approach and faith in his "comrades" abillity. The soviet xo is a truly wonderful character philosophical, wisae and a great representation of the russian spirit. THe ability of the writer to mix western and eastern ideas to show of how wonderful each ideaology and attitude can be is heart warming. The soviets are shown to be a very warm understanding people living with the "harsh" conditions of russina politics.

The subplot of the Americans captain personal demons and estrangemnt for his CIA wife, who is on mission in turkmenistan, also related to the stolen sub, and how his at times crippling fears and regrets are brought out and cleansed by the soviets is brilliant. As is the captains wife understanding of her husbandsd trauma through her time spent with the Fadeen, a desert tirbe whom she works with.

This book is emotional on many levels and is so much more that a simple all action submarine novel..though the action is well thought out and compelling.

I would recommend this book to anyone, you dont have to love subs to love this book.

Well done Bart..well done
