Synopsis

The Apocalypse starts here...in this startling literary breakthrough In these apocalyptic 'scenes from a history as yet unwritten', America has become hopelessly bogged down in a protracted Operation Desert Storm. Elvis has returned from the dead as a tormented political assassin, there are aliens in the White House and giant monsters on the rampage. Factor in crazed combat robots, the total destruction of Japan, insane conspiracy theories and huge quantities of mindless blood-spattered violence, then get ready for the end of all creation in this stunning literary debut. Illustrated by legendary underground artist Savage Pencil.

I'm not really much of a SciFi fan, so when a friend gave me a copy of Destroy All Monsters, I was somewhat uncertain (not to meention sceptical) of what to expect. Sentiments that proved to be unfounded as "Destroy..." is certainly one of the most exciting new books that I have come across lately.

The book starts as a tangle of threads of different stories that Hollings skilfully knits together with punchily written soundbites that unite to form a gripping, at times terrifying, often hilarious and unfailingly bizarre futuristic storyline.

It is a credit to Hollings' writing that while events that form the storyline spiral beyond the believable, the main characters remain resolutely "human" such that it is possible to empathise with them throughout.

Lastly, be sure to look out for the non-human characters too - Hollings' monsters are as terrifying as anything in the best Japanese cartoon strip tradition, and puppy is certainly the cutest (not to mention cleverest) small animal i have ever met

I've always been a fan of Godzilla movies so seeing a book with this title instantly caught my eye. When I began to read the synopsis I was instantly drawn in by the sheer scope of the ideas involved. Aliens, monsters, Elvis....not a combination you get everyday.

This is not a book about men in rubber suits destroying Tokyo, more like an alternative Universe where anything is possible.

As you read the first chapters everything seems totally disjointed but it all comes together in the end. Stick with it and its worth the effort.

A great bit of science fiction.

I can't wait to read anything else by the same author.

By Mr. G. Battle VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The blurb sounds like a Robert Rankin novel - Aliens in the Whitehouse, Elvis returned from the dead, a small telepathic dog, oh, and huge Terror Monsters determined to wreak havoc across the globe. It's no small boast, since this novel has all of these ingredients in spades - and more! However, Hollings' approach makes it all hard going. It's fragmented at best. The story begins mid-plot, which could be exciting, if only you had the faintest clue what was going on. Throughout the book the reader is expected to guess who each chapter refers to, making the narrative quite unrewarding to read. There are some good elements in there, but they are not played to their strengths. Robot psychopaths, cute dogs and giant Terror Monsters make for a great book, but unfortunately it's all a bit wasted here.
