Destiny vs Free Will: Why things happen the way they do, by David Hamilton, Hay House, 2007, 224 ff.
Chance and necessity in the world
By Howard Jones
In his exploration of the forces of destiny and free will, David Hamilton starts off with a look at astrology for `not only do the planets affect us through the stories that they symbolize in our unconscious minds, but they also have direct magnetic effects on our health and emotions' working, Hamilton claims, through the Earth's magnetic field. He supports this by citing the work of neurophysiologist Michael Persinger, psychiatrist Michael Berk, and others. We get our word `lunacy' from the supposed effect of the moon on erratic behaviour. His statement that `we inherit the consequences of the experiences of our parents, grandparents, great grandparents and even earlier ancestors' indicates that the philosophy of the book is Lamarckian in its treatment of epigenetics. Hamilton is also starting from the belief that `the soul chooses the life that it is about to live' when in the afterlife and that only a part of the soul incarnates, the rest remaining in the `oversoul'. These concepts shape the treatment of material in the rest of the book.
David Hamilton is a medical chemist who, after four years working in the pharmaceutical industry, left to become a professional lecturer and writer. After the opening astrology chapter here, Hamilton gives some interesting statistics on the results of word association tests and the role of myth and superstition in our lives. The third chapter deals with epigenetics and how environmental experiences affect us to modify the influence of genetic inheritance. This is followed by a discussion of NDEs and pre-life choices, calling on the work of cardiologist Michael Sabom, psychiatrist Brian Weiss and the age regression studies of hypnotherapist Michael Newton.
The Science of the Soul chapter has some interesting anecdotal accounts from the work of Brian Weiss on future life progression (as opposed to past-life regression) and how the mind or soul can affect scientific instruments through telekinesis, citing experimental evidence from the PEAR group at Princeton. The Law of Attraction chapter deals with Rupert Sheldrake's and Dean Radin's accounts of interconnectedness, as represented by the coherence of subatomic particles in quantum physics, and the power of belief. The final chapters on miracles and blessings work in this Law of Attraction idea to show the importance of beneficent thoughts towards ourselves, to others and to the world at large.
This is an interesting book showing how mind relates to this and other worlds. Our destiny it seems is partly in our genes, partly written in the stars, partly dependent on our past and present environment, but largely dependent on our will. The book has several pages of References and suggestions for Further Reading, but no index.
