Really good 21 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
I really enjoyed these two cds being a big fan of Peter Green. I think he took more of a part in these recordings than later works. His voice sounds much stronger, but not as strong as he was before. As I have said on other reviews I am not sure if Nigel Watson is playing more on guitar than Peter is, which is great in one way as Nigel is good but real fans of Peter would like to hear him coming more to the front. Fans who like the rolling R&B sound will love it though.

I so wanted to love this record. He was once one of the greatest blues guitarists ever, possessed of a touch that could transform a single note into an emotional experience. I witnessed an early Fleetwood Mac concert and his playing was sparse but utterly spine chilling....unforgettable. Destiny Road opens well with "Big Change", nicely arranged, female backing voices and Green's characteristically world weary vocals. But for me things sag badly after that and Green's playing sounds limp and insipid for the most part, despite some nice moments on "Homework" and "The Stumble". Seriously folks, play the latter from John Mayall & Peter Green's "Hard Road" album back to back with this version and you'll get my drift. If you've seen Splinter group live you'll know it's not always Peter Green playing lead guitar which is odd to put it mildly. I'm sorry to sound harsh because I know he's on a long road back and let's be pleased about that. Perhaps the old Peter Green is gone for ever but on the evidence of these CDs the new one hasn't quite emerged yet.
