Warner Bros. Pictures presents "DESTINATION TOKYO" (31 December 1943) (135 min/B&W) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) -- Cary Grant is a tower of strength as Captain Cassidy, skipper of an American submarine U.S.S. Copperfin bound for Tokyo harbor --- Its mission: to enter the bay undetected and place a landing party ashore to allow a Navy meteorologist to survey Japanese weather conditions - information vital to the upcoming Doolittle air raid on From the sub's embarkation in San Francisco to its climactic retreat from Japan, there's not a single solitary dull moment in the 135 minutes of Destination Tokyo.

A fabulous WWII submarine adventure!

19/4/2011 I first saw Destination Tokyo on TV many years ago.Made at a time when World war 2 was going on it gave the audiences of the day an uplifting if not rather inaccurate account of the action of the USS Copperfin on its way to a mission in Tokyo bay.It dealt with the relationships within the crew, all solid dependable guys to a man ,it had a dangerous situation on uplifting an important officer vital to the mission in artic like conditions ,when during a surprise attack by the japanease a bomb is lodged in the subs superstructure, and young crew member and the captain risk their lives to defuse it.The same lad falls ill with appendicitus and has to undergo and emergency operation by the coreman no doctor on him falls the burden of carrying out the lifesaving op.There is more of course ,this movie was made for a differnt audience from todays who demand more from their movies ,but Destination Tokyo is a good picture okay not todays fare perhaps but good anyway one for the oldies Rankin Cattan

Underwater dramatics 19 Jan 2012

The trouble with the film is it is very long and takes ages setting up the drama of the expedition to do daring things against the Japanese. It is well made, Cary Grant makes a devastatingly handsome captain, and John Garfield is the sexy crewman ready with a quip to perfection. It is a sound, solid movie which, once it gets going, delivers the goods in terms of thrills - but it takes a long time getting going. The two leads are backed up by a first rate supporting cast of players who might have become stars.
