4.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know but were afraid to ask ! 23 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Robert E Wood's unofficial guide to space 1999 is a scintillating read! every episode from year 1 and 2 is reviewed, dissected and commented on by Wood and many of the cast and crew who worked on the show. Want to know why Barry morse left after the 1st series and never came back?,lots of rumours about this over the yrs but here you finally get the full version from Morse himself. Lots of great information here.. for a few tidbits..Landau comes across as being a scene grabber and 2nd season producer Fred Freiberger is given a less than stellar comments by the cast and crew.Intrigued? then you need this book! Wood seems to be a bit of a generous marker reviewing some episodes far better than they deserve! but gives a fair account on a lot of them.

Space 1999 has gained a cult following over the yrs, never particularly successful in the u.k but it acheived moderate success abroad. Here you'll learn just about all you need to know!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth getting if you are a fan 12 July 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
An extremely well researched book which gives lots of original and highly detailed information and observations. This is not a very visual book so don't expect much in the way of illustrations. However, this is compensated for by the depth and breadth of information. There is in-depth analysis of every episode (from both seasons) and it is therfore a useful companion to the excellent Network DVD release of series 1.

Space:1999 was a fairly popular tv-series in it's day but it does not enjoy the widespread mainstream recognition that it's sci-fi contemporaries, Star Trek and Star Wars, receive today. Space:1999 is very much of cult status in the modern world and, as is often the case when shows are at this lower level of recognition, information tends to be scattered and hard to come by even with the presence of the internet. So we, as fans of the show, are fortunate indeed to have a tome like this available to us. The material is largely concerned with the production of the shows rather than any technical aspects and also offers an extended critique of individual episodes as well as each of the two seasons and the show as a whole. The interesting thing is that a lot of this critique is from the people who actually worked on the show - writers, directors, producers, actors etc. which makes it particularly pertinent. This book is full of information and opinion, commentary and juicy inside information that would be virtually impossible to find anywhere else.
On the whole I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and it has given a whole new level to watching the show again with all the background knowledge and opinion for each episode. If I had to make any criticism it would be the lack of photos - Ironically, the only photos included are model shots (i.e. technical stuff) rather than of any of the people involved. I understand why this is, there are licensing and permission issues when featuring pictures of people and this is an "unathourised" biography of the show. It's a shame as there are probably all sorts of candid, behind-the-scenes photos in the possession of those involved in the show and this would be the perfect place for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Overview of Space 1999 19 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
If your a fan of this 1970's sci-fi show you'll love this. The book is written by someone who absolutely lives and breathes the show. All aspects of the production are covered across its two seasons with comprehensive episodes guides and commentaries from cast and crew. You can pick it up anywhere and read something new about the show you didn't know before. The actor Barry Morse who played Professor Victor Bergman in series one never appeared in series two and the reason for his omission is fully explained here.

The book is over 500 pages long and one thing that should be mentioned is that there are no 'official' photos from the show as it is entirely 'unofficial'. There are, however, photos of some of the spacecraft models used in the series supplied by their modelmaker, Martin Bower.

A great read if your a fan and you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beneath the surface of Moonbase Alpha 14 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
An excellent read, containing more than a few revelations!

A pretty good overview of series 1 & 2 - and why they are SO markedly different from each other, including some of the backstage machinations that resulted in the new format of series 2 (which I personally loathed even as a child, because it all just got embarassingly juvenile!).

If you were a Victor Bergman fan and wondered why Barry Morse didn't survive series 1 find out the REAL reason in this weighty, and insightful, tome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice 3 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is mostly edited text from conventions and web pages, so there is really not many additional insights, but, nevertheless, it is a nice overview of the series. Well done.
