Doha, capital of Qatar on the Arabian Gulf - five thousand miles from London with 11 countries to travel through and 23 Customs posts on the way. Blizzards in Austria, sandstorms in Syria; broken-down trucks to repair and bogged-down trucks to dig out of the sand... The exciting, gruelling life of drivers on the overland run to the Middle East was captured by the BBC's World About Us series in 1977 and transmitted in two parts. In Part One, 'The Easy Bit?', we meet British drivers Frank Hook, John Williams, Dave Poulton and Dick Rivers. We follow their mixed fortunes and tyre changes across Europe, into communist Yugoslavia and Bulgaria and then to Turkey where bureaucracy was a way of life. Part Two's 'Difficult Bit' leads through chillingly dangerous roads to Ankara and over the Taurus mountains. Then through Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia - each offering a different challenge to the drivers and their Scania and Leyland trucks. This double-DVD set contains both parts of the original programme. You'll see that for these Astran International drivers their work was more than just a job - it was a way of life with a sense of adventure, winter and summer, ice-cold and desert-hot.

this was bought for my husband who watched the originally on tv as a 13 year old. this was a turning point for him as after watching it all he wanted to do was be a truck driver. 30+ years later he still drives trucks and loved the dvd as it was very nostalgic, he never made it to Doha but has driven all round Europe.

I saw this on the TV when it was originally shown. This is a great DVD for truckers of a certain age, or for younger ones who want to see how things have changed.

This DVD is really excellent. It was made in the mid 70's I believe. This is how it used to be - the trucking to the middle east. I found it fascinating, especially the second part (It comes with 2 discs). Part 2 is when the section from eastern Europe to their destination in Doha.

I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to see how it was in the boom time of the 70's.

This is a fantastic trip down memory lane back to times when we did not worry about Health & Safety and drivers hours but got on with the job!! These guys made their own decisions because their lives depended on it. A great true story.

I received on Tuesday the DVD Film. Destination Doha Filmed by BBCs World

In the Seventies and Early Eighties I did numerous runs to Doha and Kuwait for
Birds Eye Frozen Food.

As this was over 35 years ago I was looking forward to seeing this DVD Part1 & Part2
London to Doha by 3 of Astran International Trucks and 4 of their Drivers.

I watched it this afternoon and I was very disappointed as there were large parts of the
journey missing. The parts missing were either not filmed or were edited out.

What ever the reason for someone like me looking to relive the journey by watching this
1977 trip by 4 Astran Drivers was as I said disappointing. :(

Having said that the parts filmed were very good. :)
