Heartwarming and real 29 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
Like many people, I found my way to this album from being a fan of Wallander. My hope was that I'd find "more of the same". I wasn't disappointed. I downloaded the album from the artist's website (I commend the idea - support the talent!) and keep getting drawn back to it again and again.

This is "real" music, heartwarming, beautifully performed and recorded but without the need for over-production. It's like having an acoustic folk band right there in front of you.

The songs themselves are well crafted; a gorgeous, rich, home-made fruitcake of an album.

I despair about the current state of the music business; X Factor, arenas, "here today, gone later today" artists. When I was a lad we went to clubs, bars and beautiful old theatres. Artists had longevity and were allowed to develop their unique style. This album gives one hope for the future of the business - although in my opinion we need to go back before we go forward as the business has gone a long way the wrong way. Artists like Emily Barker are a great place to start.

Your curiosity which brought you to this review is well founded. This album might not change your life, but it will improve it. You won't be disappointed.

Soulful folk 7 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is the second Emily Barker CD I've bought, having seen her support The Waifs in 2008. As a live performer, she's great: a great singer who is funny and engaging with the audience.

The album is an improvement from "Photos. Fires. Fables". I recognised more songs from the live set than I did from the first album. It's modern Australian folk sung by someone with a haunting soulful voice. Most of the songs work as individual songs, but these are not pop songs. It's also different from the Waifs - she's a solo singer less focused on being on the road. It's still good stuff, and it's great that one track was selected to be the them tune for the BBC's version of Wallander.

This album recording was funded by doing gigs at people's houses, cheque donations and festivals, which means she's someone in close touch to her fan base. She has the talent to become a big star.

Unlike most, I didn't discover Emily Barker via Wallander. I first caught her, playing solo, live in a small intimate venue where her voice filled the room. Having now seen her live twice again with the Red Clay Halo, I'd commend anyone to buy the CD's, but I've only given this 4 stars simply to reserve the fifth for the live performance. I'd agree with another reviewer; SUPPORT THE ARTISTS! I try and buy cd's at gigs. Live the Red Clay Halo are simply wonderful, each member of this exclusively female ensemble appears to be a multi-intsrumentalist of the highest calibre and the four part harmonies are astonishing, if ever music made the hairs on the back of you neck stand up, this does exactly that! The most recent gig provided some great added value, in the form of Emily's husband Dom Coyote, who plays a marvelous support set and then joins the ladies for the end of theirs. Collectively the Red Clay Halo are fantastic, but one of their number, Gill Sandell, is also touting her own album on the current tour, I bought it partly because her witty interjections during the gig intrigued me, it's equally lovely to the anything the Red Clay Halo do, with it's own character. So, if Wallander brought you to Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo, I'd suggest you really treat your self and catch them live, you won't be disappointed.

A great singer and a great group. The quality of the sound however is not great. At times it is difficult to the words and you need to read the cover to decipher some parts. Read more

Wallander
This has the theme song from the BBC TV series Wallander on it, and I think other songs from the same singer feature in the series.
