5.0 out of 5 stars Little Perennials, 1 Oct 2006
By sahoyde (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Despite Our Differences (Audio CD)
After 20 years making wonderful music together, the Indigo Girls prove they've still got it. This, their first album for new label Hollywood, showcases the distinctive harmonies, great tunes and strong lyrics that have made them the world's best-loved female singer-songwriter duo.

Unusually for a duo, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers write their songs separately from each other. As with their previous albums, the tracks alternate between the sweet and sad complexities of Emily's songs, and Amy's harder-edged, rockier sound.

But guess what? It's Emily whose anger against the Bush administration and hope for a better kind of politics comes out in the stunning opening track, Pendulum Swinger: "your glistening eyes / show the hell you're gonna give 'em / when they back off the mic for once / and give it to a woman." And it's Amy's warm, wounded heart that beats in the bittersweet "Three County Highway." The IGs never stop developing as songwriters, and these tracks show show them pushing their boundaries with renewed energy and commitment.

The Indigo Girls did a guest spot on Pink's latest album and she returns on the track "Rock N Roll Heaven's Gate." Other highlights include the catchy "Little Perennials", with its striking chorus, and "Run", which explores the uncertainties and tensions of a relationship's early days.

Like REM, the IGs first came to prominence in 1980s Georgia: like REM, they're smart, and build on and subvert a range of musical traditions. As out and proud artists, they're sometimes compared to Melissa Etheridge, or as female songwriters, to Suzanne Vega, Tracy Chapman, or Mary Chapin Carpenter. And with their recent covers of "Homeward Bound" and "Mrs Robinson", it won't be long until someone calls them the female Simon & Garfunkel.

But none of these comparisons quite cut it. Because I can think of few other acts - and no other female duos - who are able to take everything they've learnt and keep growing to stay at the top of the game. With four albums still to deliver for their new label, these Little Perennials will be with us from some time yet. And on the basis of this album, I can't wait to see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Fine Vintage, 3 Feb 2009
By The Wolf (uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Some things in life are dependable.

The songs of Ms Ray and Ms Sayers have been
just that and more for twenty years.

'Despite Our Differences' contains some of
the best material ever to have burst out of
this unique duo's long-time collaboration.

There is a vivid edginess running through
the album from top to tail.

Mr Froom's production is never less than
sympathetic.
Mr Chamberlain (drums); Ms Kenny (bass)
and again Mr Froom (keyboards) create a
rock solid framework for the thirteen
five star compositions.

So many delights it's hard to know where to start.

The familiar, distinctive vocal harmonies have
rarely sounded better.
'Pendulum Swinger' and 'Little Perennials' (one of
Ms Ray's most upbeat and raucous songs) open the
album in fine vintage style.

Ms Sayers 'Fly Away' is a piano-led ballad of
outstanding beauty. An enchanting highpoint.

Ms Pink lends her splendidly rough and ready support
to 'Rock and Roll Heaven's Gate' (a favour returned
following the IG's moral support for her own magnificent
'Dear Mr President' the year before).
The raw immediacy of the recording has a one-take feel.
A real stormer !

Ms Carlile's pretty vocal contribution to the lilting
country melody of 'Last Tears' is truly lovely
(as is Mr Leisz's mournful pedal steel guitar).

That these fine singer/songwriters continue to
produce music of such refined quality after so
many years is a proud testament to an extraordinary
creative association and enduring friendship.

The differences, whatever they may be, are
clearly working to their (and our) advantage.

Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Their Best, 21 Mar 2007
By Frederick MacDonald "Derek MacDonald" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Another consistently strong offering from Amy and Emily. Following the established pattern of alternating songs with Emily going first on this occasion.

It isn't too often that I find an album where I don't skip tracks while playing it in the car, but this one passed the test.

Best tracks for me are Last Tears, Little Perennials and I Believe In Love but given the strength of the album I reserve the right to change that from day to day!

Saw them play some of the tracks live recently at the Glasgow ABC and you should definitely check them out if you get the chance. I've never seen an artist as happy to hear the crowd sing their songs.
