Book Description

Note: This is a short story (less than 10,000 words) and not a novella. Customers who enjoy the traditional Regency Romances of Georgette Heyer will enjoy this witty Regency short story by New York Times bestselling author Candice Hern. Lydia Bettridge is a young woman suffering the pangs of unrequited love. To capture the attention of Geoffrey Danforth, the man who has stolen her heart but barely notices her, she has resorted to desperate measures with a seemingly clever plan. By engaging the help of Phillip, a friend of her brother's, to play the love-smitten fool in public, she hopes to pique the interest of her unnamed love. But when Geoffrey himself shows up to take Phillip's place, all her careful planning is turned upside down. What's a girl to do but to make the best of it? This short story was originally published in The Mammoth Book of Regency Romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Little Short 30 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A sweet little Amuse-bouche, over all most before it began, but lovely all the same. It left me want to add more by this author to my list at Good Reads.

Personally, I love anything that has a "Lydia" in it .... although my own one was named after Lydia from Pride and Prejudice!

3.5 stars, but not quite making 4, purely because it could have been fleshed out a bit with more back story.

As stated this is a short story. Quite often I find short stories lacking in content but I did really enjoy this one. It is a lovely romance to read when you are short of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful, sweet, but too short story. 5 Feb. 2014

And short it was – short and predictable – short and adorable, but too short for me. I was left hanging. It finished, just as I was getting into the story. Lydia is mad for Geoffrey, but he doesn’t notice her. In public, her friend, Phillip, is to play a smitten chap, a clever plan to catch Geoffrey’s attention. Alas, Geoffrey himself shows up instead of Phillip to carry out this plan! Although the story was delightfully predictable, it needed a bit more... something.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 16 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Really enjoyable, have never read Candice before but she tells a great story. The pace is typically slow for this genre but she expertly keeps you hooked the whole way through with a few surprises thrown in. It is a feel good story and a great escape from our century to another more elegant time. Would definitely recommend this to my fellow escapists!

5.0 out of 5 stars quick read 28 Jun. 2013

This story is advertised as a quick read and it delivers that premise.

There is nothing highbrow about it, it stays within it's genre and delivers a sweet story.

i've given it 5 stars for those reasons and also i've read other writngs by this author and she is a good writer who researches her period.

Girl loves big brother's friend and conspires with big brother & another friend to see whether first friend cares about her.
You can start & finish it on the way to work!
