This is my favourite film of all time as I can watch it again and again and always notice something new - either dialogue, photography, lighting etc. From the very start, when the cigarette is stubbed out oh so deliberately I start to smile and this continues as the over the top violence simply becomes the opportunity for Roberto Rodriguez to show his excellence. (one part I mus admit I fast forward is the scene when the young lad is to show what he is made of - this scene is simply violent) I have two copies as I lend it to friends and have a fear of not having it returned. The others in the series El Mariachi and Once Upon a Time in Mexico are good but cannot compete. This is the only review I have ever submitted so that says it all!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit cheesy, but still alot of fun! 22 April 2004
Format:DVD
This film is abit cheesy really, and it tries really hard to be super cool, but that just makes it better! At first i thought, uh, another western spoof with a corny script and bad storyline (and you have to admit it is rather bad) but as the film progressed i began to fall in love with it.

There is alot of violence (the kind where someone gets shot and blood squirts out of them) but it's far from the kind that makes you feel sick. Some gun fights are abit unconvincing (all of them really) but you have to remember that it's a spoof (thats what it says on the back of the DVD case).

As a collectors edition DVD i thought the extras were poor, and should really of contained two discs or a special edition booklet at least. But for the money you can't do much better!

Make sure you check out some Tarantino films if you enjoy this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Customer Is Always Wrong 19 Aug 2003
Format:VHS Tape
So reads the neon letters over the bar in an inspired opening sequence, in a brilliant example of the originality and artistic flair that make the film compulsive watching. The Latin music is a heartbeat to the brutal underground of the drugs world, working out of the sleepy Mexican town. The film is full of clever touches, sumptuously shot with plenty of attention to detail, and features a stunning performance by Banderas as the mariachi hero. Buscemi does a highly credible job in his supporting role, and the other characters find their moments. It is a cynical genre film, one which deserves a place next to the Tarantino greats, and Rodriguez' tour de force.

There is no other way to see this film other than to buy it, because there is no way to watch it just the once. If you've ever loved a Western or Pulp Fiction, be assured you'll find this a worthwhile addition to your movie library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sheer entertainment
No, you cannot possibly take Desperado seriously. The script / story (such as it is) is quite deliberately terrible -'simplistic' would be an overstatement. Read more
