3 of 4 people found the following review helpful By T. Turpin-Jelfs on 31 Mar. 2009
Format: Audio CD
Despair is the tenth solo album to be released by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the mastermind behind such Groups as De Facto and The Mars Volta, during January of 2009. The album was written by Rodriguez-Lopez and committed to tape prior to the commencement of The Bedlam in Goliath sessions in 2006. The record was inspired by Rodriguez-Lopez's journey around Jerusalem and utilises various field recordings and studio techniques.

Despair was written and produced by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and is his second official, full-length release that deals entirely with sound manipulation and ambiance. For those that are familiar with the self-titled release by Omar Rodriguez Lopez & Jeremy Michael Ward will find this album to not only be a marked improvement in comparison but also a giant step forward in the Noise music genre that is capable of rivalling achievements made by artists such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Lustmord and Merzbow.

Fans that are searching for more of Omar's catchy riffs and mind-bending time signatures will find themselves greatly disappointed as this is a record that deals primarily with sound of a more primordial and less rhythmic nature. Each track including the apt album title refers to films created by the German filmmaker, Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

The opening track, In einem Jahr mit 13, demonstrates a superior level in production quality and proves to be a superb introduction to an album that reveals itself to be a very interesting and worthwhile experience.

As with Omar Rodriguez Lopez & Jeremy Michael Ward, Despair is not an album that is intended for the casual or weak hearted listener, but is instead a wonderful experiment in sound that explores the very boundaries of consciousness. Listeners that are seeking a more exciting and versatile experience to that which is usually offered by various artists will find this album to be a breath of fresh (possibly acrid) air.

Omar, I'm a Fan, but Buyer, Be Warned... 28 Feb. 2009
By Modest Man Mike - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
First off, let me say I'm a huge fan of Omar's works. I own the majority of everything he (and collaborators) put out. I've done so, because i respect the musical fringes he chooses to dabble in (and he usually brings back interesting pieces to listen to).

BUT POTENTIAL BUYER BE WARNED: this CD is a collection of dissonance and droning audio texture. Be assured, I'm not trying to Hate on Omar for this collection of tracks. This CD DOES NOT showcase any of his talent as a guitarist (there is no guitar, bass, rhythm, or recognizable instrumentation to be found at all).

I could see these tracks as ambiance for scenes in a film or a Dark Ambiance, but I can not recommend them for normal musical listening. I CAN however HIGHLY recommend some of Omar's other projects: Apocalypse Inside of an Orange, Calibration (is Pushing Luck and Key Too Far), A Manual Dexterity: Soundtrack, Vol. 1, Se Dice Bisonte, No Bùfalo, Omar Rodriguez, Megaton Shotblast

I'm a Huge fan of ALL those Albums, I always have them on constant rotation, Among all Mars Volta Albums, Free Moral Agents, Everybody's Favorite Weaponand AT THE DRIVE-IN: Vaya, Relationship of Command
Despair is an apt title. 20 Feb. 2010
By Christoph P. Holcomb - Published on Amazon.com

I understand that doing experimental music means pushing the boundaries of what is music but this can be taken too far. Every track on this album sounds like every other track, and consists of a droning sound with some wailing voices and other minimalist sounds effects thrown in. If this were background noise during a horror movie or video game (think a living wall of trapped souls) or the intro to a song that got progressively more complex I'd understand. But it isn't, it's 40 minutes of the same thing over and over again. If this sounds like your cup of tea, or you want to own every single Omar Rodriguez Lopez album buy Despair, otherwise it should be avoided.
NOISE LP: For Completists Only* 6 April 2009
By Alaric - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The other reviewer's dismay is justified in an era where one isn't able to preview albums in the store (for the most part). Even so, as a constant ORL and TMV listener, this one is a little bit of a stretch --it really only fits in well in the context of his other solo albums, and since I tend to listen to more than just one of them consecutively, this one is welcomed filler. Otherwise, in reference to the haunt of roulette dares: caveat emptor.

*great artwork otherwise.
Not Entirely Disappointing 14 Jun. 2011
By Gabe Medrano - Published on Amazon.com

I used to believe that only a true ATDI/TMV/ORL collector would be interested in purchasing DESPAIR, but if you approach this album as an artistic demonstration of meditative sounds, then it's pretty awesome! It's a great album to study, read, or fall asleep to but if you are looking for any musical value in this, then I suggest you pick a different ORL record. This album isn't a total bust. I managed to find a great use for it and with that, I actually kind of like this record.
