4.0 out of 5 stars Third and final book in the series. 20 April 2013

Set in Jamaica, the alien virus has spread and the aliens are hunting down the living to feed on.
A good ending to the series with a fast paced story from cover to cover.
At the end of the story there is a chapter where the author tells us how the story came about and what drove him to write the trilogy.

Part 3, did not feel as gripping as the first two books but still a well paced read. Would keep an eye out for any more that may come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced sprint through a redemptive love story with a pandemic and murderous aliens thrown in for good measure. 11 April 2013
By Ryan Foster - Published on

With Robert Brumm's "Desolate" series, you'll pay for the whole book, but you'll only need the edge! Ok, that doesn't really work as well for books as it does for movies, but it's true nonetheless. If I had to describe this book series in one sentence it would be this:

A fast paced sprint through a redemptive love story with a pandemic and murderous aliens thrown in for good measure. (In fact, I liked that so much that I used it for the title of my review!)

Robert tells a great story with plenty of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. From the very first page you're pulled into Howard's world, with his tragic past and seemingly hopeless present and future. The whole book series felt like a sprint to me, in a great way. The story moves along at a great pace but the action is what pushes you along and keeps the pages turning quickly. Each part of the book is either suspenseful and action packed, or filling you in on the amazing story behind the action. Either way, it's a hard book series to put down.

Robert's vivid depiction of scenes and surroundings makes you feel like you're in the moment with the characters. There's one spot in the book where Howard encounters another main character in the book (I won't spoil anything for you) that I can still remember like I was there. Two people, an unlikely duo, finding each other in a world that's been turned on it's head - where trust between strangers is a thing of the distant past.

The title of the final book, "Redemption", couldn't be more fitting. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire Desolate series, and encourage you to buy and devour them as I did. You won't regret it - I certainly don't!

4.0 out of 5 stars a great ending to the series 13 Mar. 2013

After reading the other two books, I was very excited to jump into this one. I was not let down.

The story picks up with where the other left off, with a little bonus background info to help develop the backstory. Howard is still the main character, but some of the other characters rise up and really start to shine. The suspense is very high in a few spots, but well balanced with the rest of the tale.
I was very happy with the ending of this story. It was a "complete" ending, although the door was cracked open just slightly if he wanted to write another. It does not end on a cliffhanger at all. I think of all three books, this one had the most humor in it, but it also had the most heart. You can watch this author evolve while writing all three of these and I really enjoy that.
This story was one of those that, when it ends, I sat back in my chair and went "ahhhh....that was fun." I really enjoyed this trilogy and highly recommend everyone read it.

    Desolate 3 by Robert Brumm

The series keeps getting better and better on every level.

Plot: many questions find their answers in this third installment. Don't expect me to spoil anything here...

Style: Desolate 1 and 2 hit the mark with a concise and efficient, take-no-prisoner prose. Desolate 3 manages to get somewhat a little more refined, improved and polished, without losing this rugged, brutal edge.

Thrills: you'll feel stranded on the island along with the book's characters. You'll find it impossible to stop reading before making sure they've reached some kind of safety. If they ever manage to do so.

Characters: there's still the main character, Howard, but the secondary characters aren't that secondary and all bring something specific to the narrative.

Brumm continues to play accurately with clichés. Many situations, dialogues and characters feel like déjà-vu, but in a good way, like a homage paid by a storylover to the films and books we've all seen and read before. Since Desolate 1, this quality is what has set the series in a category of its own for me: there are stories within the story, multiple POVs, books within the book (you'll have to check the end for that)... Hell, there are even indie writers getting killed in there (Sorry Hugh!)

In a nutshell: here's a short, absolutely thrilling and "satisfying" read. Like any great sequel, it offers both a continuity and a totally different experience, taking you on a rollercoaster of action and leaving you begging for more.

By the way, the end COULD be THE end, but I really hope it's not. Because I DO want more...

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed every page! 19 Mar. 2013

Such a great ending to this series! I liked Desolate 1 and 2 very much, but this book is undoubtedly the best of the three. Story elements from the first two books get some added detail, and a few characters are really well developed. Loved both Emily and Soo, and was sorry to see Dave go. I liked Howard right from the first book, so I'm pleased with the outcome of his adventures. The rest of the planet, not so much, but it wasn't Howard's fault, poor guy.

I thought both the prologue and the epilogues added a lot to the story. The alien ship has its own story, and Howard shares some of his thoughts. I found a couple of things to snicker over, too, which is always fun. I'm sorry to see this series end, but it's definitely done now. Another book following this one would be telling a different story.

Thank you, Robert, for the great reads! Now go write something else, please. There's a nice corner right over there.

Really enjoyed reading this series (being an avid reader of this genre its becoming harder and harder to find new and enthralling books to read!)

Well done to the author. Great story. The only groan I have is the characters choice to whole-up in the resort. Without giving anything away I will just say after the ordeal they had just escaped I was surprise by their actions during this section of the story. But I guess its like watching any horror movies and cringing at the impending doom you can so obviously see coming as a result of the characters irrational choices.

Really enjoyed the authors footnotes about the writing of the books too, was interesting insight into his through process that I haven't come across become.
