Welcome to "Desmond's", Britain's funniest barbershop, where you can relax, play dominoes and sometimes even get a haircut! Set in South London, this hilarious sitcom follows the everyday lives of its patrons, who come more for the conversation than for the haircuts. The Desmond's - Series 1 DVD contains the entire first season of the hit show, which revolutionised British television by introducing a black cast to the predominantly white sitcom formula, much like "The Cosby Show" introduced African Americans to the American sitcom. In this series you'll be introduced to demon barber Desmond Ambrose (Norman Beaton); his long suffering wife Shirley (Carmen Munroe); teenagers Gloria and Sean; yuppie banker son Michael; regular visitors Porkpie and Matthew; and all the customers, relatives and friends who keep the Peckham salon bursting with laughter.

Don't Scratch My Soca! is the theme tune to this Desmonds show.

I remember watching it first time around and brought back cool memories for me.

Just a shame that Channel 4 have only released the first two series on DVD.

Encase you wondering there were actually 7 series maid before Norman Beaton sadly died in 1994.

A follow up series was mad called Porkpie with Ram John Holder reprising his role as Porkpie.

Early British Black Comedy at its BEST

Probably the best vehicle regularly giving airtime to another culture without the racial slurs & stereotyping of the day.
in my opinion it was removed too early

I grew up watching this and loved it, definately a show you talked about afterwards with your friends, the characters are unforgettable and gags that are still as side splittlingly funny, its no wonder Desmonds became a cherished classic (and highly sought after dvd release in the US market).

Without a doubt C4 turned out some rare classics like Father Ted and Desmonds is no exception.

Has it's funny moment's, and the shows stand up through the comedic talent's of Beaton,"Pork Pie" and the African student. the dialogue between the offspring son and daughter is weak, and adds nothing to the overall comedic effect. It does beg the question why the scriptwriter's did not have a follow up with just the adult characters. This was the first series so perhaps i'm being a bit too harsh. Certainly has feel good factor in small doses, but certainly worth a look.

I am absolutely delighted that this has finally come out on DVD. It is a classic series from a great black comedy. With old African sayings, constant gags yaaa mans all the way. Its superb and is a must for anyones collection. I am getting my credit card out as I write this review. Well worth its money.
