Biography

Although he didn't become widely known until the 1970s, Dr. John had been active in the music industry since the late '50s, when the teenager was still known as Mac Rebennack. A formidable boogie and blues pianist with a lovable growl of a voice, his most enduring achievements have fused New Orleans R&B, rock, and Mardi Gras craziness to come up with his own brand of ... Following on from the Doctor's 1973 collaboration with new Orleans funk greats The Meters that spawned the phenomenal 'In The Right Place' this album appeared less than 12 months later and followed the same blueprint with the legendary Allen Toussaint again handling keys and production duties. It's hard to fault the decision to repeat the 'fonky' R'n'B brilliance of 'Right Place' and 'Desitively Bonnaroo' more than holds its' own making it the perfect companion piece. The sinuous funky rhythms of drummer Joseph Modeliste and bassist George Porter infuse everything with a deep groove that is totally infectious and Toussaint's tasteful keys perfectly blend with the good Doctor's jazzy piano. Like 'Right Place' there are smokey ballads with 'Me-You=Loneliness' and 'Go Tell The People', gospel blues with 'Let's Make a Better World', throbbing R'n'B with 'Mos'Socious', soulful grooves on 'R U 4 Real' and the title track, and lashings of hot righteous 'fonk' on 'Can't Git Enuff', 'Quitters Never Win', and the superb 'Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away'.

Although 'Right Place' is more widely known and recognised as one of the Doctor's finest albums this one is not far behind and although perhaps not so chock full of classics it is nonetheless a 5 star album that any fan of the Doctor's should own. Always a class act the Doctor's jazzy funk drenched R'n'B is simply infectious and a must for any fan of James Brown, Little Feat or Mose Allison for that matter and on this album he delivers yet another classic. Buy it, borrow it or steal it but don't miss this damn fine offering from the one and only legendary Night Tripper!

This album is an all-time favourite of mine - a fantastic collection of superb songs, intelligent texts, Dr. John's voice, brilliant music and superb back-up singers.
All the songs, quick or slow, are excellent in their own rights.
Even if you never heard about Dr. john before, this album is a must-have... - thank you ever so much, M label, for releasing this masterpiece (earlier only found on vinyl) on CD!
Finally, the CD sounds just as great (Bass etc.) as the (vinyl) record did - well done!

The collaboration between Dr John and Allen Toussaint on this record oozes class and professionalism. There is a purity about the music. No gimmicks, just very talented musicians playing at the top of their game. Whilst on some of Dr John's other recordings, there have tended to be a number of heavily voodoo tinged tracks, which may or may not appeal to his listeners, this album has songs with a more universal appeal. Songs with lyrics which are relevant at any time, for any people, such as Go tell the people, Let's make a better world, Quitters never win etc.
There is not a dud track on the whole album. This is definitely a feel good record which figures very highly on my own personal playlist
