More About the Author

The first romance stories Stephanie Laurens read were set against the backdrop of Regency England, and these continue to exert a special attraction for her. As an escape from the dry world of professional science, Stephanie started writing Regency romances. Her hobby quickly became a career when her novels about the masterful Cynster cousins captivated readers, making her one of the romance world's most beloved and popular authors. Currently living outside Melbourne, Australia with her husband and two cats, she has been writing historical romance novels for more than 20 years and is a New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestseller.

When I read in her newsletter that her next novel would be set in The Middle Ages, I thought that's something to look forward to . Sadly, I wish I hadn't bothered . That sounds harsh- but after what seemed to be a promising start , the plot made very little sense and by the end , sadly I thought Miss Lauren's had most definitely " lost " the plot altogether. It's going to take a while for me to buy one of her books again , based on this one.

I know for a fact this author can write really good books - see Devils Bride. Unfortunately Desire's Prize is not up to this quality. I found it extremely boring. So boring that I considered not finishing it. The story is dragged out and the characters are poor imitations of her characters in her Stephanie Lauren books.

I did enjoy the basic plot of this book BUT I wonder why all the heroines in Stephanie Laurens books are stupid nitwits. The heroine in this book Eloise at first appeared to be a strong-willed woman yet she was certainly weak-willed enough to allow liberties by the hero Alain. She did several idiotic things that a strong woman would NEVER allow or even give voice to. This spoiled the story somewhat for me. I expected to read she would foil him in absolutely every way till near the end. As a very strong-willed woman myself I definitely would NEVER give any man an advantage in any way. I found myself wondering what was she thinking to give him so many advantages? Any woman subjected to the sexual abuse and horror as Eloise at 15yrs of age would never be able to forget it, it would sadly affect her for the rest of her life in regard to men. I am 70 yrs old and having been in a similar situation at 16yrs old know this myself. The horror NEVER leaves, just stays below the surface. I hope in future Stephanie is able to inject a bit more realistic thoughts to this problem when writing about such a situation.
