Format: Paperback
This excellent book addresses the popular myth of a 'post-material' economy, where culture is the only commodity and the workplace becomes the province of play rather than oppression. Heartfield explodes these conceits by exploring the context of their origins, and argues interestingly that even the analytical categories employed by such obscure postmodernists as Jacques Derrida are economic in origin.
What seems to motivate Heartfield's passion, and the book's greatest strength, is his belief that the notion of a post-material economy not only disguises the capitalist mode of production, but institutionalises it too, by precluding any real challenge to the exploitation it breeds.
