Product Description

Cynthia Breazeal here presents her vision of the sociable robot of the future, a synthetic creature and not merely a sophisticated tool. A sociable robot will be able to understand us, to communicate and interact with us, to learn from us and grow with us. It will be socially intelligent in a humanlike way. Eventually sociable robots will assist us in our daily lives, as collaborators and companions. Because the most successful sociable robots will share our social characteristics, the effort to make sociable robots is also a means for exploring human social intelligence and even what it means to be human.Breazeal defines the key components of social intelligence for these machines and offers a framework and set of design issues for their realization. Much of the book focuses on a nascent sociable robot she designed named Kismet. Breazeal offers a concrete implementation for Kismet, incorporating insights from the scientific study of animals and people, as well as from artistic disciplines such as classical animation. This blending of science, engineering, and art creates a lifelike quality that encourages people to treat Kismet as a social creature rather than just a machine. The book includes a CD-ROM that shows Kismet in action.

Details on Kismet 19 Oct 2002
Format:Hardcover
The book is well structured, and includes many photos and diagrams. I found it useful because I work exactly on the same topic. However, most of its content can be found elsewhere (in published articles). The accompanying CD-ROM includes very interesting videos, although I think they can also be found elsewhere. In summay, I definitely recommend this book, but only if you are really interested in the topic and/or in Kismet, and you want to know as many details as you can.

This book as been the start point for my PhD in Human Robot Interaction (HRI). Kismet is a fundamental milestone in the expanding research sphere of HRI, gathering and integrating relevant research from a number of different research fields to present an end result that provides a solid reference for new and developing research.

Breazeal accumulates all the work and presents it in a detailed manner clearly highlighting the underlying connection between HRI and developmental psychology and social learning, areas that are gaining interest in the social and cognitive robotics fields.

A good detailed book of some eye opening research though it is a tad specific to informed people: i.e. if you are not informed in aspects of Robotics then it is likely that you will not follow everything in this book strait away.
