Book Description

15 May 2008 0230537367 978-0230537361
Policy makers are increasingly demanding evidence from randomized trials. The book focuses on the design of rigorous trials rather than their statistical underpinnings or analyses. Consequently, statistical theory is absent and statistical methods are minimal. Few other texts go into such detailed description about randomization procedures and different trial designs within the same volume. The book has chapters on: pragmatic designs; placebo designs; preference approaches; unequal allocation; economics; analytical approaches; randomization methods.

Product Description

'David and Carole Torgerson have written an important book about an important topic...After introducing the "breathtaking simplicity" and "beauty" of the randomized trial design [they] outline the key features of well-designed, well-conducted and well-analysed randomised trials, using illustrative examples from health care, education, criminal justice and other fields. The book is a veritable treasure trove of information and advice' - Sir Iain Chalmers, Editor, James Lind Library (http://www.jameslindlibrary.org/)

Very useful tool for masters level students and those in the field.
Clear discussion of biases and the randomisation process.
More explanation of sample size calculation would have been helpful but signposting for further help was adequate.

This has the basics about RCTs and how to evaluate study rigor. It's a good citation if you're trying to defend why you used your study design.
