If you are engaged in organisation design this book will provide most of what you are looking for in terms of approach/tools and techniques.Jay Galbraith, teamed up with two consultants from a consulting firm to write this powerful and practical guide.

It was recommended to me in a conversation with a leading member of the UK Organisation Design Forum.I have had the book for several years and used the approaches in my work as an Interim Manager/Consultant.

The subject of designing effective organisations has not attracted as much attention as you might expect. It is a complex field with a lot of factors influencing outcomes. This book is a comprehensive guide to the organisation design field. It highlights what and how you you need to take into consideration to be successful.

I have not found anything else that is as good as this, I do not feel it will date.

Some additional material That I recommend you look at is:

- Integrated Organization Design - the new strategic priority for HR Directors. This a white paper - 09/01 - pub Jan 2009, can be downloaded free from CPHR, the Centre for performance led HR. ( Based at Lancaster University Business School.)

The first part of a wider ranging project - bringing together Organization Development and Organization Design. Into a "new" capability called by the authors "Architectural Design".

Covers the ground well and will challenge your thinking. Picks up on Galbraiths Five Star model.

A very well written book with a superb set of work sheets at the end of each chapter. The book is extremely stimulating and comprehensive and it will take you through a highly practical process of determining how change-able your organisation is and where your priorities need to be. The only thing I would have liked is a CD-ROM with word versions of the worksheets as per Designing your Organization. Recommended.

Constant change, economic uncertainty, unrelenting competition and the frenetic pace of cyber-commerce now strain even the most nimble organizations. Traditional leaders designed many companies, especially those more than a few decades old, along strict hierarchical, top-down parameters, so these firms often find it hard to react swiftly to change. Consultants Jay Galbraith, Diane Downey and Amy Kates have assembled their savvy change management counsel to rescue stuck companies. They designed this "thought-guide" to lead executives through the wilderness of organizational transformation. Their experience-based workbook is chock-full of exercises, questions, formats, charts and tools to direct you step-by-step through the process of creating a "reconfigurable organization" that can handle shifting circumstances. While some examples in this near-classic manual are dated, the advice is still spot-on. getAbstract recommends this excellent, nitty-gritty primer on organizational transitions to executives and human resources professionals.
