Review

Design as Politics destroys our fantasies of 'sustainable design' and urges us to face our collective future. Read this before deciding whether you have the courage and conviction necessary to be a designer of the future. Lisa Norton, School of the Art Institute of Chicago To say that this book is 'timely' is an understatement. Fry offers us one of the most prescient theses for the design of a different possible future - a time and a politics 'to-come' - that we have. We all ignore the messages of this book at our own peril. Duncan Fairfax, Goldsmiths, University of London There is no more challenging and urgent political question than whether democracy is able to deliver sustainable economic and political futures. Fry's is the first book to ask this question, not in the abstract but in the context of asking how we make the future. Clive Dilnot, Parsons The New School for Design, New York Fry grabs you by the collar and shakes you until everything you thought was true seems like a giant lie ... What more can you ask of a book than to challenge and incite? Interiors --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Clive Dilnot, Parsons The New School for Design, New York Fry grabs you by the collar and shakes you until everything you thought was true seems like a giant lie ... What more can you ask of a book than to challenge and incite? Interiors For many reasons beyond its rhetorical force, Design as Politics richly rewards a close and considered read. The book is revelatory. It exposes readers to often critiqued but (for Fry) deeply misunderstood behaviors, ideals and institutions. [...] There are few design theorists or writers attempting to understand and helping their peers to understand the nature and scope of unsustainability as adamantly as Fry. [...] Our collective wellbeing depends on writers like Fry who continue to provoke sharp thought, dispel pernicious myths and rouse designers and other makers of 'things' to help transform our collective future into one that sustains rather than diminishes. Keith Owens, Design Philosophy Papers

astute thinking 10 Feb 2011

Design as Politics is a very timely and astute review of the role of architecture as it has to be if we are to do anything about the environmental crisis which is upon us. Well worth reading and pondering on.
