Biography

Design was a British six-piece vocal harmony group in the early 1970s and its members were Barry Alexander, Gabrielle Field, Kathy Manuell, Jeff Matthews, John Mulcahy-Morgan and Geoff Ramseyer. Their music has been described as ‘sunshine harmony pop with a light hippy vibe’ and ‘melodic folk-pop with a shimmering, almost psychedelic, West Coast feel’.

Design released five albums and thirteen… Read more in Amazon's Design Store

Product Description

CD Description

· Shimmering sunshine pop harmonies with a folk and hippy psychedelic twist. Here are the first and second LPs from the UK six piece boy/girl vocal group who came closest to the US Fifth Dimension.

· Other musical comparisons at the time were also made to Free Design, Mamas and Papas and The Groop.

· They recorded five LPs and 13 singles between 1970-1976. The first LP was released in the US first giving them early international profile.

· None of the recordings have ever been reissued or on CD, in the main because the copyrights were hidden away in an independent company which dissolved. There has meanwhile been plenty of interest with tracks appearing on several bootleg
· compilations and download sites. (e.g. Minstrel's Theme appeared on `Fading Yellow Vol.5'.)

· Further to this recent exposure and profile raising has come from the worldwide release of several DVD compilations of 70's TV shows from Morecambe & Wise, The Two Ronnies , Tommy Cooper, and more, all featuring appearances by Design.

Product Description

I have long been a fan of Design and I am delighted to be able to replace my scratchy and long lived and loved vinyl. For those not in the know back in the early to mid 70's they were everywhere. Appearing as guests on such high profile shows as The Two Ronnies,Morecambe & Wise,Benny Hill,Tommy Cooper,Sez Lez and countless others. The reissues on this Cd comprise their first and second releases on Epic. however things did not go smoothly as they were signed to Epic USA rather than Epic UK this caused release and distribution problems, Despite this the records garnered critical acclaim and the high profile TV appearances gained them a small but devoted following. However with little advance notice Epic pulled the plug and the band switched to EMI for subsequent releases.

The music of Design is basically soaring harmonies provided by the 6 man group allied to some fine songwriting abilities. The first release "Design" features an ecletic mix based on folk melodies stylish vocals and harmonies on a par with the likes of the Beach Boys and Association for me the standout tracks are the single the Coloured Mile/Willow Stream and The Lonely

The second album continues in much the same vein but for me it contains several songs that I will always associate with them Love is, Jet Song & Take a Boat are little mini classics of vocal dexterity, but it is the Beatles Strawberry Fields cover and the McCartney Man We was Lonely which show them at thier best.

Over their lifespan Design released 5 albums a large number of singles and with them popping up on many of the reissued DVD's of TV programmes It is appropriate to release these tracks which have never been available since first release. My only regret is that there appears to be no planned release for the 5th Album (By Design) or any compliation of the A and B sides of the none album track singles So if anyone from the band or RPM reads this finish the job and give us the complete catalogue

A must buy if you like stylish harmonies & wonderful arrangements

Having first heard design on the late night radio two programme 'Night Ride' at the end of the 60s I then tried to find one of their Albums, without any success. Some years later I heard them again when Terry Wogan played some of the tracks from the 'In Flight' album. This was duly purchased. The guru in our local record shop found me 'Day of the Fox' and told me that there were two earlier albums but that they were deleted!

After a lot of effort and letters to deletion specialists I finally gave up! Some 35 years later I was able to purchase copies of these albums on ebay!

Now, at long last, we can now get these albums on one CD. For less than the cost that I paid for one of the vinyl copies. The music sounds as fresh as it did when I first heard it - is it really over 40 years ago? Excellent sleve notes from Band member Barry - the notes on this collection cover from the start up to 1972. The rest of the story up to the present time are on the second collection.

So if you remember design from those late nights on Radio two - from their numerous TV appearances or are just curious - buy this collection of their first two albums. And while you are ordering just add the other collection. Day Of The Fox / In Flight

I've just bought the two Design CDs and I LOVE THEM! I bought one of their 45s "Jet Song" back - I still have it somewhere - and expected it to be a big hit (as it should have been). Now let's hope for the fifth LP plus the 'orphan' tracks compiled for another CD - I'm ready to buy it now!
