4.0 out of 5 starsNot for Drupal noobs10 April 2012

If you're new(ish) to Drupal, this isn't the book you want to start with.
The book presents a bunch of useful tips for the design phase of creating a Drupal site, using a website the author worked on as a practical example, and a number of case studies/interviews with professional Drupal developers.
As someone who hasn't done too much out-of-the-box Drupal stuff yet, I found it a useful read and learned a few new things about Drupal. It won't make you a professional Drupal-er overnight, but there are some good tips and tricks for designing and prototyping Drupal sites.

3.0 out of 5 starsToo hard for me21 Jan 2012

I've tried a couple of times but I've never been able to understand Drupal. Maybe its because I'm not great at reading all the instructions, preferring to take a play and learn approach, doing a bit, reading the how to, doing a bit more.
So when O'Reilly Media published Dani Nordon's Design and Prototyping for Drupal I thought "great - at long last I'll understand Drupal".
Well, close but not quite.
The book could just as easily be called 'Design and prototyping for the internet... with some sections on Drupal'. In fact, the general material on design and prototyping were great, and I'd recommend them to anyone who wants to get some hands-on insights from a writer who knows her craft.
The Drupal parts left me cold. I suspect that if you understand the basics of Drupal then you'd get a lot more out of Nordon's insights into how to use that cumbersome beast to produce elegant websites - but if you are a Drupal no-hoper like me then I'd suggest going with an easier solution (I use Joomla).
So the recommendation? Buy it if you understand Drupal enough to feel comfortable negotiating it's weird ways. Borrow it if you're interested in web design, it is a wealth of wisdom from a great designer. Pass it if you are hoping, like I was, to have the mystery of Drupal revealed.
