Product Description

The most overlooked component in 3D animation is design. This is a cross-platform book that will show how to apply the techniques of pre-visualisation through sketching, colour, and photo reference to enhance your 3D. As a CGI producer/director, Geoffrey Kater communicates to 3D artists on a daily basis about the importance of using traditional design techniques to improve and fully realise animation projects. When faced with your next 3D project, this book will have you reaching for the pencil first, instead of your keyboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that puts it all together! 29 Dec 2005
By Don McArthur - Published on Amazon.com
I've been using 3d for 2 years now and don't know how to draw. Every book i've read on drawing is too complicated. Design First for 3D Artists is awesome because it is easy to understand and covers a lot about drawing and design. When I finally got the book it was everything I wanted because it shows how to start with a simple drawing technique and turn it into a final 3d animation. I can't wait to finish! There are so many drawings and the 3d characters are awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a cool book 2 Jan 2006
By Don L. McCoy - Published on Amazon.com
This is a well thought out book, I have a lot of 3d specific books on my shelf and this one is top notch, Design! What a concept, as an 3d visual effects artist I am always building 3d models from other people's designs and sometimes from my own. This book gives you the artist a view from the designer's viewpoint. As an experienced 3d person or someone just getting into 3d this is a book well worth having on your shelf.

It's on mine!!!!

Good job to the Author!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Designed my world 9 Nov 2006
By LorenzoS - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book changes everything. It has changed the way I look at creation, period.

The best investment I've made toward my career. Design it first, then build it.

Now i'm reaching for the pencil or Intuos first. Buy this book if you want to be a better artist or if you want to challenge yourself.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great starting point! 7 Jun 2007
By Renato Murakami - Published on Amazon.com
Not for advanced users, this book explains very thoroughly how and where to begin in the 3D modeling world, with a pencil and paper.

It begins with drawing basic shapes on paper.

A great book to overcome probably the mos difficult part on 3D modeling: "Where do I begin?".
