Product Description

One might say that CJ Washburn is obsessed with Stella Summers. After all, common sense all but takes flight when she goes missing for a time. How could he not think to check his email or voice mail or not find the note she had left in his apartment? He runs to the scene of a body dump in fear that it is her, possibly the third victim in what appears to be turning into a serial killing rampage.

“And this guy calls himself a private investigator?”

A private investigator he is, and a good one at that. However, women’s bodies keep turning up and by the fourth victim he becomes a person of interest; by the fifth, the prime suspect and the subject of a manhunt from the Idaho panhandle to Southern Arizona. Bodies continue to drop around him until his deepest fear is pushed upon him and his investigative skills are challenged at the highest level. In a message from the killer he learns that the next victim will be one of the women in his life; his daughter, his girlfriend, his attorney or even his ex-wife. Who is the next target of this deranged killer?

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart Pounding Suspense 13 Sep 2013
By REgina
Format:Kindle Edition
I love everything author James Paddock writes, so I when I discovered he had just released a new book I was so excited. Deserving of Death didn't disappoint me in any shape or form.

This is a story about CJ, an ex cop turned private eye, who just happens to stumble upon the latest victim of a serial killer.
For most people that would be the end of their involvement in the case, but unfortunately, the serial killer decides to set CJ up so the police believe he's the person responsible for the Guilt Murders. Can CJ and his friends convince the police of his innocence or will he be charged with something he didn't do? Deserving of Death is a wild ride of suspense and heart pounding action. I loved this book and highly recommend to everyone who loves a great mystery and crime story. Well done, James Paddock. Well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystery! 13 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I was very interested to read this new book by Mr.Paddock (after reading 2 of his other books) and I was not disappointed. It is a Mystery and Thriller rolled into one. It had me thinking hard about who the suspect was, which I got totally wrong, so some good writing. Did not take me long to read as I needed to know how it ends :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold Statement and Terrific Question!!! 10 Sep 2013
By Vonda Norwood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The author gives us a fantastic story where fully engaged characters take us on a mystery, close to home, and includes the question; Does a person deserves to die?

I very much enjoyed the way the story opened with the main character questioning himself professionally and personally and then as the story unfolds his questions and concerns come into play, made CJ very easy to identify with.

As for the mystery, I can't say, because it IS A MYSTERY! One with suspense, action and excitement while being solved!!! I loved it!!!

This author has an easy style of writing and tells one heck of a GREAT mystery!!!

Thank you for the copy! I would definitely read this author's work again and highly recommend this book, to adults. The story is about a serial killer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paddock Kicks Cliche to the Curb and Packs in Action 24 Oct 2013
By Alliji - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As the book opened, I thought it was going to be just another police officer turned P.I. who drinks too much book. CJ Washburn is an ex police officer turned P.I. but that is where the cliche ends and the action begins. After a night of drinking, CJ finds a body in a dumpster. After that. even more bodies turn up and CJ seems to be the prime suspect. Paddock kicks the action into overdrive as CJ utilizes the skills he honed as a top police investigator to evade arrest as well as find who is framing him.

This book is multi-layered, smoothly written and tucked into the heart of the action is a great love story. I'm a fan and can't wait until the next CJ Washburn book comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Mind Blowing Detective Story" 28 Feb 2014
By Nancy of Utah - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This novel grabbed me right from the beginning as a private detective becomes entrenched in suspicions of being a serial killer. There have been two murders of women, both wrapped in quilts and thrown into dumpsters. Private Investigator Clint J. Washburn, known as CJ, is getting severely stressed, because his secretary, Stella Summers, has been off the grid with no communications from her and not knowing where she is. They've grown very close romantically since he hired her, and he is fearful she may have become a victim. She finally calls, talks quickly and is secretive, and says she'll explain more the next day and hangs up. This doesn't help relieve his stress. The next day, Dan Payne, a Tucson police detective, notifies him there has been a third murder. But Dan also has a missing-girl job for him, the college daughter of George and Brenda Lindendale. One late night, unable to sleep, and wanting some Dr. Pepper soda, he drives to a local convenience store. While parked there, across the street at a closed restaurant, he glimpses a dark van pulling behind the restaurant, then swiftly leaving. His detective instinct draws him to the dumpster behind the restaurant...yes, there is a body wrapped in a quilt. He jumps in, thinking she may be still alive. He's contaminated the crime scene, and .. he's contaminated his reputation as well. Things can only get worse for CJ as this crime novel moves swiftly along with many twists and turns. A very engaging story, one you won't want to put down. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read! 22 Jan 2014
By Alan Black - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
James Paddock has become a masterful writer. His words can make us feel the heat of the Tucson desert sun and the cool trickle of a cold beer down our throats. I could feel my stomach twisting with tension as CJ (his protagonist) gets in more trouble than he is likely to get out of without doing a stint in an Arizona prison or buried somewhere in its vast desert.

This story managed to grab my attention from the word 'go' and held on all the way through. It made me want to skip work, but I didn't. I went to work, but managed to come home early just to get back to this story.

I highly recommend this book, even if you don't like reading an excellent mystery.
