Book Description

1 Nov 2010
Desert Towers is about the climbs. Climbs that feature the full arsenal of rock climbing challenges: loose rock, dangerously runout climbing, terrible anchors, huge approaches across awful terrain, flat tires, lightning, scorpions, snakes and, in addition, technically difficult climbing. Desert Towers is about the stories. Stories of grit, fear, determination, searching, victory, defeat, luck and friendship. Stories etched in the harsh, clear light of the desert. Desert Towers is about the summits. To reach a summit that few have ever visited is a rare thrill--yet a basic human urge that every child who has climbed a tree can understand. Desert Towers is about the desert-tower climbing experience. An experience in danger of being tamed (or even vanishing) in our modern, convenient world. Long may there be a few remote desert towers guarded by exquisitely frustrating challenges, their summits only to be reached by the most brave, stubborn and highly skilled.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern classic 20 Jan 2011
By Andrew Gram - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a superb book about climbing the spectacular sandstone towers of the Colorado Plateau desert. It is beautiful as a coffee table photo book, authoritative as a history of climbing in the desert, and interesting as a biography of the most eminent of desert climbers. Crusher's love of the desert shines throughout, and his wit keeps the text from ever becoming pedantic. Highly recommended, and destined to become a classic in the mountaineering library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A knockout! 19 Sep 2012
By lanegab - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Superb book! Full of fantastic pictures and entertaining stories.
Crusher was lucky to get hold of lots of slides that had been buried in
people's basements. And to talk to lots of characters from the early days.
But I guess I would say good things...

This is hands down the most classic and best historical book I have ever read on the history of desert climbing. It is a full color book with lots of historical images of amazing ascents of many of the coolest summits in america. Kudos to the author and sharp end publishing for this awesome book.

Best coffee table book i own.

Only downside is the price. This book is very expensive.

This was bought as a gift for my adult climber son. He began going through it immediately and an hour later was still with it. He said it's the best climbing book he's read cuz it has a bit of everything for the experienced climber. The pictures are stunning. Text is somewhat instructional and somewhat personal experience. Our copy arrived signed by the author...an added bonus. The seller had it to us in three days, way before promised. Wise purchase, for sure.
5.0 out of 5 stars A must have book for all Desert Rats 18 Jun 2011
By John Fitzpatrick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book will become the Fifty Classic Climbs for the Desert, I cannot imagine that a better history of the Desert Towers could have been written. Crusher has done extensive research to bring out the history and adventure of the time in a world now dominated by Active protection devices. I love this book and can't wait to see it he will bring out further volumes covering other areas of climbing, ( I hope he is looking into a history of Yosemite climbing to go with this! ) I highly recommend this book to all those interested in climbing in America.
